South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays out shot the Mississippi Sea Wolves 45-19, but couldn't hold off the Wolves who topped them 4-3 at the North Charleston Coliseum.
"There is a lot of good to take from this game," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "But in the end, we just couldn't get it done, and that's what matters."
After dominating the majority of the first period, the Rays found themselves down by one after one period of play. The lone goal of the period belonged to Martin Frechette at 7:49, and although they out shot the Sea Wolves 18-6 in the period, they trailed 1-0 at the periods conclusion.
The Rays continued their strong play in the second period, and this time it lead to a pair of goals for the good guys. At the 5:08 mark of the period, Josh Godfrey got his 4th goal of the year to tie the game up at one. The goal was assisted by Scott Romfo and found Godfrey coming out of the penalty box, leading to a breakaway for the defenseman. Later in the period, Michael Dubuc made his way onto the score sheet notching his team leading 34th goal of the year on a one-timer from a Pierre-Luc O'Brien pass. The goal came at 13:14 and was assisted by O'Brien and Trent Campbell. The Rays lead would be short lived however as Chris Zarb was able to tie the game up at two, getting his third goal of the year, prior to the end of the period.
Zarb struck again in the third period, at the 7:03 mark, to give the Wolves their second lead of the night, this time at 3-2. But the Rays would continue to put pressure on Ryan Munce, and at 12:11 of the period, Spencer Carbery knocked in an assist off a Brad Farynuk shot to tie the game at three. The goal was Carbery's 13th of the year and was assisted by Farynuk and Maxime Lacroix. The game remained tied until 15:48 when Mathieu Melanson got his 24th goal of the year, on the power play, to give Mississippi the 4-3 edge. Even after pulling goalie Jonathan Boutin in the final minute of play, the Rays could not get the tying goal past Munce, and fell by the final score of 4-3.
The winning goaltender was Munce who stopped 42 of the 45 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Boutin who stopped 15 of the 19 shots he faced. The Rays went 0-6 on the power play while killing off four of the five short handed situations they faced.
The Rays will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they welcome in the Gwinnett Gladiators for a 5:00 game. It's kid's day at the Coliseum featuring a kid's carnival prior to the game, and kid's tickets just 5 bucks. If you can't make it to the game, you can hear it live on ESPN Radio 910 the TEAM starting with the Benitos Pre-game show beginning at 4:45.
