Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (38-16-3) picked up their eighth win in their last nine home games after finishing off a three game sweep of the Johnstown Chiefs (31-22-3) with a 4-1 win on Saturday night in front of a spirited crowd of 5,764.
The Everblades jumped out quickly scoring a pair of first period goals to carry a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Kevin Baker opened the scoring just under four minutes into the game after converting a power play goal. Dominic D'Amour set up Baker with a quick pass from the right circle to Baker in the slot where he chipped a shot past Chiefs goaltender Kyle Gajewski at 3:40 for his 47th goal of the year.
Late in the first period Patrick Bordeleau set up and scored the second Florida goal. The play began with Bordeleau's leveling hit on Trevor Hendrikx to knock the puck loose. Bordeleau then fed a pass to Doug O'Brien in the slot. Gajewski stopped O'Brien's shot but the puck trickled behind him where Bordeleau slipped it across the line at 14:17.
After a scoreless second period, the Everblades increased their lead to 3-0 at 3:13 of the third period when Peter Metcalf took advantage of Gajewski being out of position allowing his shot from the slot to find the open net. Metcalf's seventh goal of the year was set up when Mark Lee's breakaway clanged off the crossbar before bouncing into the slot.
The Chiefs eventually found the scoreboard at 4:53 of the period when Kyle Bushee's big slap shot from the blue line snuck past Everblades net-minder David Leggio and inside the left post for a power play goal.
The Everblades sealed the win at 11:12 of the period on a nice goal by Ross Carlson. Carlson's 14th goal of the year came after Danick Bouchard worked the puck free from the right corner to Carlson who swept behind the Johnstown net before stepping out at the left post and chipping the puck past Gajewski.
Over the remaining eight minutes the Everblades once again choked off the Johnstown attack holding the Chiefs to a total of eight shots in the third period to preserve the win.
In net Leggio notched his third straight win and improved to 20-6-1 by turning away 20 of 21 shots. Gajewski sufferd loss, dropping his record to 8-11-2 after allowing the four goals on 40 shots.
On the power play, the Everblades finished the night 1-of-11, while Chiefs closed out the game 1-of-7.
