South Carolina Stingrays News Release

North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays needed to win three straight games against the Augusta Lynx to move on to the second round of the playoffs, and with a 3-1 tonight that is exactly what they did, knocking out the Lynx three games to two at the North Charleston Coliseum.

"I'm just so proud of these guys," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "They can enjoy this win for a few hours, then we will need to get ready for Gwinnett."

The Stingrays came out in the first period and scored the first goal for the fifth straight time in as many games. While on the penalty kill, Trent Campbell stole the puck and broke out on a two on one with Stephen Werner. Campbell made a beautiful feed to Werner, who put it in for his third goal of the series. The short handed goal gave South Carolina the 1-0 lead after one period of play.

In the second period, the Stingrays padded their lead, once again on a goal by Werner. This time it was on the power play, but, like the goal before it, it came on a great pass by Campbell. The goal was Werner's second of the game and his fourth of the series, tying him for most goals with Marty Guerin. Guerin had the other assist on the goal as well.

Early in the third period Anthony Battaglia cut the Stingrays lead in half, making it a 2-1 game with his third goal of the postseason. The score would remain at 2-1 until the final minute of play when, with the Augusta goaltender pulled, Campbell got his second goal of the post season, an empty netter.

The winning goaltender was Josh Johnson who stopped 18 of the 19 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was J.P. Levasseur who stopped 30 of the 32 shots he faced. The Rays went 1-5 on the power play, while killing off all five short handed situations they faced.

With the win, the Rays move on to the second round of the playoffs where they will face the Gwinnett Gladiators. Game one of that best of five series will be on Friday night at the North Charleston Coliseum beginning at 7:05.
