Chiefs eliminated by Cyclones

Johnstown Chiefs News Release

Johnstown, PA - The Chiefs forged a comeback Wednesday night, but they were unable to pull out the victory, suffering a 3-2 loss to Cincinnati at the War Memorial. Cincinnati clinched the North Division Semifinals with the win.

The Chiefs would open the game with a man advantage 43 seconds into play, but they struggled to muster a shot on goal. It appeared they would get another opportunity when Cincinnati's David Desharnais and Chad Starling went to the box just 59 seconds apart, giving the Chiefs more than a minute-long 5-on-3. The home team nearly potted a goal, as Randy Rowe dug at a loose puck in the crease, but Maxime Daigneault would make the save for the Cyclones. Conrad Martin would put the visiting team on the board at 15:54 with his first goal of the playoffs, just before a minor to Mike Knight expired. Jason Deitsch and Barret Ehgoetz added the assists. The Cyclones would strike again late in the period, as Matt Syroczynski lifted the puck over a fallen Ryan Nie for his third playoff tally at 19:43. Cincinnati would carry a two-goal advantage to the dressing room after one.

Thomas Beauregard would score his fourth of the playoffs for the Cyclones at 5:03 of the second period, with Desharnais adding the helper. Johnstown would answer with Randy Rowe scoring at 6:07. Ray Macias would pick up the puck behind center ice and bring it into the Cincinnati zone before dropping it to Rowe in the slot. Rowe then lifted the puck past Daigneault for his fourth playoff marker. The Chiefs had several chances to erase the two-goal deficit. Kenny Roche made a wraparound try midway through the period, attempting to leave the puck for Sgroi, but Daigneault sticked it away before Sgroi could get a shot off. Alex Imbeault and Brandon Straub had a 2-on-1 after a penalty to Straub expired, but Imbeault couldn't lift the pass over a sprawled Matt MacDonald. The Cyclones held a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes.

Ryan Garlock was determined to score, making two short-handed breaks across the Cincinnati blue line in the third. With Knight serving a tripping minor, Garlock was all by himself until he was slashed from behind by Cincinnati's Deitsch. Garlock sent another short-handed shot sailing off the leg pad of Daigneault while Sgroi was in the box serving a too many men call. It seemed the third time was a charm for Garlock, as he netted an even-strength goal at 16:55, his fourth of the playoffs. Macias recorded the assist. Try as they might, the Chiefs couldn't notch the equalizer in the last three minutes.

Ryan Nie took the loss in net for the Chiefs Wednesday night, recording 21 saves on 24 shots. Johnstown went 1-for-10 on the power play.
