Cyclones Advance To North Division Finals!

April 16, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release

JOHNSTOWN, Pennsylvania - The Cincinnati Cyclones spent more than 17 minutes shorthanded in Wednesday night's game against the Johnstown Chiefs-allowing just one power play goal in a 3-2 win. Conrad Martin, Matt Syroczynski and Thomas Beauregard scored the goals in the triumph. Max Daigneault turned aside 26 shots in the triumph. The Cyclones win all four games of the series-advancing to the North Division Finals for the second straight season.

The Cyclones netted a pair of power play goal in the first period in building a 2-0 lead. Conrad Martin fired a shot from the left circle from Jason Deitsch and Barret Ehgoetz at 15:54 to kick off the scoring. Then, with 17 seconds remaining in the frame, Matt Syroczynski collected a goal for the third straight game to push the lead out to 2-0. Olivier Latendresse and David Desharnais added the assists.

The story of the first period was the Cyclones special teams, collecting two power play markers in three chances and eliminating all four shorthanded situations it faced-including a five-on-three disadvantage for 59 seconds early in the opening stanza.

The teams exchanged goals in the second period, to leave Cincinnati with a two goal edge. Thomas Beauregard took a puck in the slot from Desharnais and snapped off his fourth postseason goal at 5:03, to open the lead to 3-0. Johnstown broke the shutout bid at 6:07, when Randy Rowe netted his fourth of the playoffs. Cincinnati killed another five-on-three power play and held the edge.

In the third period, the Chiefs got a power play goal from Randy Rowe, his fourth of the playoffs, at 16:55 to close out the scoring. The Cyclones went two-for-seven on the power play, while Johnstown was limited to one-for-ten with the man-advantage.

This was the fourth game of the best-of-seven North Division semifinals-a four game sweep for Cincinnati. It is the second time in team history that the squad has pulled a sweep of an opponent in the postseason. The Cyclones (55-12-5) were the North Division, American Conference and Brabham Cup (best overall ECHL regular season record) champions. Johnstown (36-30-6), which was seeded fourth, upended fifth-seeded Dayton in a two game sweep last week to advance to this round. The Cyclones advance to meet the winner of the Elmira vs. Reading series that also began last week. Reading leads the series, two games to one, with the fourth game coming up Thursday night.

A release detailing playoff dates for the North Division Finals at U.S. Bank Arena will be sent later tonight.
