Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings and Bakersfield Condors met for Game 3 of the National Conference Quarter-Finals tonight in Bakersfield. The teams split the first two games in Victoria with the Condors winning the first in overtime and the Kings rebounding for the one goal victory in Game 2.
A wide-open first period was highlighted by the goaltenders making big stops. Bakersfield Yutaka Fukufuji and Victoria's Billy Thompson brought their "A" games. The power play connected for the first time in the series for Victoria when Ash Goldie pulled the face-off win back to Dylan Yeo at the point. The rookie from Prince Albert moved to the center of the ice and let a rocket go that beat Fukufuji for the 1-0 Salmon Kings lead. That would be the score after the first period.
The flow to the game continued in the second period, but it was Bakersfield who took advantage. On the power play Kevin Truelson found himself on the right face-off dot and whipped the puck low past the right leg of Thompson to tie the game 1-1. Despite numerous opportunities for both teams the score remained 1-1 after 40 minutes.
The Salmon Kings recaptured the lead when Dylan Yeo blasted his second of the night at the very end of a power play for the 2-1 lead in almost identical fashion o his first period goal. Bakersfield would respond with just over five minutes remaining when a Chris Kaufman point shot was tipped past Thompson by Tim Konsorada. The teams would head to overtime for the second time in the series with the score tied 2-2.
In the extra frame the Salmon Kings took advantage of a Condors turnover. Wes Goldie went hard to the net, but was denied by Fukufuji. Ryan Wade picked up the rebound, but again Fukufuji was able to stick out his right leg for the stop. Marc-Andre Bernier flipped that rebound via the backhand past the Bakerfield goaltender for the win Salmon Kings 3 Condors 2 in overtime. Victoria leads the series 2-1.
