Stingrays Edge Gladiators in Shootout

Duluth, GA - Defenseman Josh Godfrey netted a goal and two assists and forwards Tommy Goebel (2a), Rob Ricci (2a) and David de Kastrozza (2g) pitched in two points as the South Carolina Stingrays (22-16-1-1) defeated the Gwinnett Gladiators (19-17-2-5) 6-5 in a shootout at The Arena at Gwinnett Center Monday afternoon.

Stingrays defenseman Dustin Stevenson opened the scoring with his first professional goal at 8:40 of the first period from forwards Rob Ricci and Tommy Goebel. de Kastrozza made it a 2-0 Stingrays lead on the power play at 13:01 deflecting a shot from Godfrey past Gladiators goaltender Chris Carrozzi. Ricci picked up the second assist. Gladiators forward Andy Brandt cut the lead in half at 16:13 on the power play from forwards Dan Kissel and Tom Zanoski.

Godfrey reclaimed a two-goal lead for the Stingrays on the power play firing home a pass from forward Trent Campbell at 4:08 of the second frame. Goebel received the second assist on Godfrey's second tally of the season. The Gladiators pulled the game back within one at 8:18 when defenseman Paul Flasche blasted a shot over Stingrays goaltender Todd Ford from the top of the right-wing circle. Forwards Ian McKenzie and Justin Milo registered assists.

Stingrays forward Jordan Pietrus carried the scoring into the third period with his second of the season at 5:52 from forwards Luke Popko and Matt Scherer. Moments later, de Kastrozza buried his second of the night on the power play from Godfrey at 7:59.

Gladiators forward Michael Forney started the late rally on the power play at 9:21. Forward Pat Galivan and defenseman Sam Roberts added helpers. Galivan put the Gladiators within striking distance at 14:08 from defenseman Matt Duffy. Zanoski tied the game on the power play with 55 seconds to play to complete the comeback and send the game into overtime. Both sides failed to score in the extra session and the game quickly moved to a shootout. Ricci and Goebel lit the lamp for the Stingrays and Ford stopped all four Gladiators shooters to preserve the win.

Ford improves to 11-6-0-1 stopping 41 of 46 Gladiators shots. Carrozzi drops to 2-4-0-1 against the Stingrays kicking away 33 of 38 chances. The Stingrays finished the afternoon 3-for-5 on the power play while the Gladiators went 3-for-7.
