DULUTH, GA - The Gwinnett Gladiators battled back late in the third period for the fourth straight game, but fell short in a shootout against the South Carolina Stingrays Monday afternoon at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.

Trailing 5-2 in the third, the Gladiators (19-17-7) struck back at the 9:21 mark with a powerplay goal from Michael Forney who was set up by Pat Galivan and Sam Roberts. Forney now has 5 goals and 14 assists over his last 17 games.

The Glads weren't done yet, as Pat Galivan closed the gap to one putting home a rebound in front to bring Gwinnett within one in front of 5,540 on the annual Martin Luther King/Kids Day game.

For the second straight game Gwinnet drew even in the last minute of regulation. After Stingrays forward Trent Campbell took a late high-sticking penalty, Tom Zanoski tied the score at five with a laser from the far point with only 55.3 seconds left in the third. Drew Paris and Galivan assisted on the tally.

After a scoreless overtime Tommy Goebel and Rob Ricci scored the only goals in the shootout to give South Carolina the 6-5 win.

For Gwinnett, this is the seventh game in a row where they picked up at least one point.

The Stingrays (22-16-2) took a 1-0 lead on the Gladiators at 8:40 of the first period. Dustin Stevenson was able to sneak one past Chris Carrozzi earning his first tally of the year.

David de Kastrozza increased the Rays lead to two adding a powerplay goal at the 13:01 mark.

Andy Brandt's 11th goal of the season at 16:13 on the powerplay with assists to Dan Kissel and Tom Zanoski cut the deficit in half making it 2-1 at the end of one.

Just 4:08 into the second period the Rays added another powerplay from Patrick Cullity increasing their lead to 3-1.

Defensemen Paul Flache cut the lead to 3-2 with a slapshot from the near point that went over goaltender Todd Ford. The back and forth action continued and at the end of forty minutes the score remained 3-2. The Rays added two goals in the third period, the first coming from Jordan Pietrus at the 5:52 mark. De Kastrozza earned his second of the night just 2:07 later making it 5-2.

Both powerplays were effective, with Gwinnett going 3-for-7 while South Carolina went 3-for-5.

Gwinnett will be back in action on Sunday January 23rd to host the Greenville Road Warriors at 4:05 pm.
