South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Duluth, GA -The South Carolina Stingrays (8-2-1-3) pushed their unbeaten streak to eight games falling to the Gwinnett Gladiators (6-2-1-1) 3-2 in the shootout in front of 10,583 at The Arena at Gwinnett Center. The Stingrays conclude a nine game road trip earning 14 of a possible 18 points before heading home tomorrow to face the Charlotte Checkers.
The Stingrays capitalized on their opening power play as Matt Fornataro beat Gladiators goaltender Danny Taylor high blocker-side at 6:02 from Gregg Johnson and Spencer Carbery. South Carolina finished the night 1-for-5 on the man advantage as Fornataro's marker stood as the lone goal at the end of the period.
The score remained through 40 minutes of play, but the Gladiators kept heavy pressure on Stingrays goaltender Braden Holtby forcing 14 shots on goal and generating five power plays. The Stingrays penalty kill shined through keeping Gwinnett scoreless and 0-for-5 on the man advantage through two periods.
The Gladiators tied the game at 13:21 of the third period as defenseman Aaron Brocklehurst buried his second of the year from Brad Schell. Stingrays forward Michael Dubuc quickly silenced the crowd at 14:48 with a tally from Dylan Yeo to regain a one-goal lead. Moving late into the game and trailing by one, the Gladiators pulled Taylor in favor of the extra skater and capitalized on the advantage at 19:24 with a goal from Drew Paris. Paris knocked in a lose puck in front of Holtby along the left-wing post to tie the game at two.
For the fourth time in four meetings, overtime would be needed between the two teams. Each side fired 2 shots on goal, but none found the back of the net. The contest would move to a shootout and the Gladiators converted on their first two opportunities to seal the win. Holtby knocked away 34 of 36 Gladiator shots while Taylor earns his third win of the season stopping 26 of 28 Stingrays opportunities.
The Stingrays return home to North Charleston Coliseum for the first time in three weeks tomorrow, November 14, against the Charlotte Checkers at 7:05 p.m. The first 1,500 fans will receive FREE energy efficient CFL light bulbs courtesy of Berkeley Electric in celebration of the Stingrays' second annual Green Night!
