
Stingrays Clip Wings 4-3 Behind Scherer's Two Tallies

North Charleston, SC -Forward Matt Scherer fired home two power play goals as the South Carolina Stingrays (9-12-1-0) defeated the Kalamazoo Wings (9-10-1-2) 4-3 at the North Charleston Coliseum Tuesday night.
Kalamazoo opened the scoring at 9:08 of the first period as forward Justin Taylor fired a backhanded shot over the left shoulder of Stingrays goaltender Todd Ford from forwards Sam Ftorek and Darryl Lloyd. Scherer tied the contest on the power play with his sixth goal of the season by blasting a pass from forward Nikita Kashirsky from between the circles under the glove of Wings netminder Riley Gill. Forward Pierre-Luc O'Brien recorded the second assist.
Stingrays defenseman Dylan Yeo made it 2-1 early in the second period firing a wrist shot over the glove of Gill at 1:05 from defenseman Nate Kiser and forward Rob Ricci. Forward Justin Milo gave the Stingrays a two-goal lead at 6:55 with help from forwards Jordan Pietrus and Kashirsky. Wings forward Brady Leisenring pulled the game back within one late in the frame completing a 3-on-1 rush with defenseman Jon Landry and forward Andrew Fournier at 19:20.
Fournier tied the contest 1:31 into the third period tipping in a pass from defenseman Steven Tarasuk past the right pad of Ford. Forward Trent Daavettila notched the second assist. Moments later, Scherer buried the game-winning goal on the power play at 4:54 from O'Brien and defenseman Bryan Schmidt.
Gill suffered the loss stopping 34 of 38 Stingrays shots. Ford improved to 4-3-0-0 kicking away 24 of 27 Kalamazoo chances. The Stingrays ended the night 2-for-7 on the power play while Kalamazoo went 0-for-2.
The Stingrays kick off a three-game road trip on Thursday, December 9 as they battle the Reading Royals at 7:05 p.m. at Sovereign Center.
