Jackals Acquire Goaltender Machesney from Salmon Kings
December 7, 2010 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release
The Elmira Jackals announced Tuesday that they have acquired goaltender Daren Machesney from the Victoria Salmon Kings in exchange for goaltender Zane Kalemba and future considerations.
"After playing almost a third of the season with two first-year goaltenders, we thought it would be beneficial to acquire a player with American Hockey League and Calder Cup championship experience like Daren," Jackals head coach Malcolm Cameron said.
Machesney is in his fifth professional season after spending the last three-plus years in the AHL, winning a Calder Cup championship in the process.
In 2009-2010, Machesney played in 21 games with the AHL's Manitoba Moose, posting an .894 save percentage and a 3.34 goals-against average while going 5-14-0.
The Hamilton, Ontario native won the 2009 Calder Cup with the Hershey Bears, playing in 36 games for Hershey with an .876 save percentage, a 3.24 goals-against average and a 19-12-1 record as the Bears won their 10th Calder Cup.
His first full season with the Bears in 2007-2008 saw Machesney set career bests with a .916 save percentage, a 2.55 goals-against average and a 22-10-2 record.
Machesney's rookie season of 2006-2007 saw him split time with the South Carolina Stingrays and Hershey, accumulating an 8-11-3 record between the two clubs, an .887 save percentage and a 3.11 goals-against average.
The 23-year old played his two full OHL seasons with the Brampton Battalion prior to turning pro.
In 2005-2006, Machesney went 28-17-3 with a .908 save percentage and a 3.03 goals-against average as the Battalion advanced to the second round of the OHL Playoffs.
Machesney went 16-12-7 in 2004-2005 with a .917 save percentage and a 2.74 goals-against average and was subsequently drafted that summer by the Washington Capitals in the fifth round (143rd) in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. He was also named to the OHL's All-Rookie First Team.
With Victoria this season, Machesney played in six games with a 1-4-0 record, an .852 save percentage, and a 4.10 goals-against average. He attended training camp with the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets and the AHL's Springfield Falcons.
The Jackals are on the road Wednesday night in Trenton before returning to First Arena for home games Friday and Saturday against the Devils. Fans looking to purchase tickets may call (607) 734-PUCK (7825), visit the First Arena Box Office, or log onto JackalsHockey.com.
