Thunder Players "Giving Moore" For the Holidays

December 7, 2010 - ECHL (ECHL)
Stockton Thunder News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. ‚¬" The Stockton Thunder, a two-time recipient of the ECHL "Award of Excellence," announced members of the team will host underprivileged youth for a rare hockey experience in time for the holidays at Saturday's Dec. 11 home game against the Utah Grizzlies and a special gift sharing event on Monday, Dec. 13.

"Hockey Players 4 Kids' goal this year is to implement 'Give Moore for the Holidays' in each member city," said Thunder defenseman and alternate captain Daryl Marcoux. "This program was started by a former teammate of mine who began a similar program two year's ago when he was with the Worcester Sharks. His hope was to give back to local kids who wouldn't otherwise get a gift for the holidays and haven't had the chance to experience a hockey game. That was enough motivation to help start this in the community of Stockton. It's fantastic and refreshing to see our whole team respond to an offer to participate voluntarily ‚¬" all of the guys didn't hesitate to jump in."

Members of the Thunder, including players and coaching staff, participating through the Hockey Players 4 Kids (HP4K) foundation and its "Give Moore for the Holidays" program, will host 23 youth residents of the Mary Graham Chidren's Shelter in Stockton with free tickets for a night out at the Thunder's final home game before the holiday season on Saturday, Dec. 11 at 7:30 p.m.

Each player and member of the coaching staff will visit the same group of children at the United Way of San Joaquin County in Stockton on Monday, Dec. 13 at 2:00 p.m. (event is closed to the general public) and present gifts to the group of children.

"Give Moore for the Holidays," founded by San Jose Sharks defenseman Mike Moore ‚¬" a former college teammate of Marcoux at Princeton University ‚¬" is a signature event hosted by HP4K that challenges professional hockey players to give back to their local communities and underprivileged youth through creative programs during the holiday season.

Hockey Players 4 Kids is a foundation consisting of nearly 40 hockey players from across the world, including Marcoux, Moore, Anaheim Ducks forward George Parros and Philadelphia Flyers forward Darroll Powe. It aims to reach local communities of professional hockey teams and positively impact the lives of local youth through several programs during each year.

More information about HP4K can be found at www.hp4k.org. The United Way of San Joaquin County is located at 401 East Main Street in Stockton.

A proud affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers and San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League and the Oklahoma City Barons and Worcester Sharks of the American Hockey League, the Thunder was voted "Best Local Sports Team" by readers of the San Joaquin Magazine for the third straight year, led the ECHL in attendance for four consecutive seasons and drew over 200,000 fans for the fifth consecutive season in 2009-10. Season tickets, mini-plans and individual tickets are on sale now.
