Stingrays Announce Captain And Alternates For 2009-10 Season

North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays and Head Coach Cail MacLean announced today that Matt Scherer has been named captain and Spencer Carbery, Keith Johnson and Gregg Johnson have been selected as alternates for the 2009-2010 season.

"I feel that leadership is one of the strongest characteristics of our team," MacLean said. "We look to move forward with the same steady contributions of leadership from many different players. Players like Nate Kiser and Spencer Carbery will continue to play a dominant role in that department. Our team was in an enviable position in that we had many good options."

Scherer, 27, becomes the seventh captain in Stingrays history. The third-year pro has ten goals and seven assists for 17 points this season with the Stingrays. Prior to turning pro, Scherer spent for seasons with the University of Connecticut earning 105 points (62g, 43a) in 138 games.

"Matt provides a constant example both on and off the ice," MacLean said. "He approaches the game in a very professional manner and is someone that is very consistent in his leadership."

Carbery, 28, leads the Stingrays in penalty minutes with 64 and has netted 16 points (6g, 10a) in 28 games this season. The Victoria, BC native split last season with the Stingrays and the Fresno Falcons earning 17 goals and 15 assists for 32 points in 68 games.

Stingrays forward Keith Johnson will serve as an alternate captain for the Stingrays for all remaining home contests this season. Johnson, 25 currently ranks 15 in the ECHL with 13 goals and 19 assists for 32 points.

Forward Gregg Johnson will wear an 'A' for all Stingrays road games. Johnson, 27, joined the Stingrays after spending the previous two seasons in Europe with the SaiPa Lappeenranta of the FNL and Frankfurt and Wolfsburg of the DEL. The Windsor, CT native has eleven goals and 15 assists for 36 points this season for the Stingrays. Prior to turning pro, Johnson played four seasons with Boston University accumulating 47 points (14g, 33a) in 125 games.

The Stingrays continue their three-game road trip Friday, January 8 in Gwinnet to face the Gladiators at 7:35 p.m. at The Arena at Gwinnett Center. Listen to the game LIVE at www.stingrayshockey.com !
