January 7, 2010 - ECHL (ECHL)
Reading Royals News Release
Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, today announced that forward Ben Gordon has been named the Reebok Hockey ECHL Player of the Month for December. Gordon, a second year pro from International Falls, Minnesota, scored six goals and picked up fourteen assists (twenty points) and played to a plus-9 (+9), which tied for the league best, in the ten games he played for Reading during December. Gordon, who has been on loan to the Marlies since December 27, 2009, is the first player in the nine year history of the Royals to win the ECHL Player of the Month Award.
Gordon registered at least one point in nine of the ten games he played for Reading in December-and eight of those games were multi-point performances. Gordon, who played his college hockey at the University of Minnesota, put up career numbers and tied a Royals' team record with a five point night in Reading's 7-3 win over the Johnstown Chiefs on December 16, as he became the first player in team history to score three goals and register two assists in a single game. Gordon played to a plus-5 (+5) in that game. Gordon also became the first player in team history to win the ECHL's Player of the Week Award twice when he received that award for his performance during the week of December 14 - 20, 2009. He was also the ECHL's Player of the Week last season (March 23 - 29, 2009) shortly after being acquired by the Royals in a trade deadline deal with the Cincinnati Cyclones. Gordon, who has racked up a team leading forty points (16g-24a) in twenty-eight games with the Royals, is currently fourth in the ECHL scoring race. He has also registered five points (2g-3a) in five games (and is riding a four game point streak) with the Marlies since being called up.
The Royals return to the ice on Saturday (January 9, 2010 @ 7:05) when the Cincinnati Cyclones visit the Sovereign Center for the only time during the 2009-10 regular season. The Royals game night broadcast on the Royals Radio Network presented by Transmissions by Arbogast will kick off with the pre-game warm-up show at 6:35 pm.
