Sting Hold on to Defeat Sudbury 3-2
October 11, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Sarnia Sting News Release
Despite facing three games in as many days the Sarnia Sting did what good teams do, they found a way to win.
Down 1-0 after 20 minutes, Sarnia scored three straight goals and then held off a late charge from the Wolves.
Justin Fazio was solid again behind the pipes, especially in the third period as he turned aside 28 of 30 shots.
Chase Campbell and Ryan McGregor both scored their first career OHL goals and Sasha Chmelevski scored the game winner.
Danny Desrochers and Connor Cummins scored for Sudbury. Goaltender Matthew Menna had 18 saves.
With Sarnia on the road last night in Flint against the Firebirds and Sudbury off, the first period was dominated by the Wolves as the rink seemed to be tilted in the Sudbury end for most of the frame.
The Wolves drew first blood at 8:31 as Captain Danny Desrochers let go a shot, top shelf that alluded the reach from goaltender Fazio. Michael Pezzetta and Dmitry Sokolov were credited with the helpers.
Sarnia's best scoring chance came from Josh Jacobs while on the power play. Jacobs fired a hard wrist shot from inside the faceoff circle but Wolves netminder Menna, made a nice glove save.
Sudbury out shot Sarnia 9-5 and there was only one minor penalty called.
In the second period Sarnia had a number of chances, hitting a goal post along the way before they finally tied the game. Campbell netted his first career OHL goal after receiving a great pass from Daniel Nikandrov, at 15:37. Brandon Lindberg also got credit for an assist.
Fazzio kept his team in the game making a couple of outstanding saves in the middle frame and also received a little help from the goal post. Sarnia out shot Sudbury 8-6.
Noah Bushnell was called for a cross check at the end of the second period and the Sting started the final period shorthanded.
After killing the penalty to Bushnell the Sting went ahead for the first time as McGregor scored his first career goal depositing a rebound past Menna at 2:27. Josh Jacobs and Jakob Chychrun had the helpers.
Less than three minutes later Chmelevski scored what proved to be the winner from Pavel Zacha.
Cummins, pulled Sudbury close at 3-2, but Fazio shut the door and the Sting celebrated a successful Thanksgiving weekend taking five out of six points, to run their season record to 5-2-1.
It was the sixth time in seven games that the Sting were involved in a one goal game, with Sarnia going 4-2-1.
Both teams failed to generate offense with the man advantage as Sudbury went 0-8 and Sarnia 0 for 3.
