Rangers Squander Two-Goal Lead; Fall to Steelheads in OT

October 11, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Kitchener Rangers News Release

The Mississauga Steelheads trailed 2-0 with less than eight minutes to play but a shorthanded goal, a power play goal, and an overtime goal gave the home team a 3-2 come-from-behind win over the Kitchener Rangers on Sunday afternoon from the Hershey Centre.

Although a frustrating loss for the Rangers (2-0-3-0), they still register a point in the standings and, like the Erie Otters, remain undefeated in regulation to start the season. The Steelheads snap a three game losing streak to improve to 3-3-0-1.

The first 40 minutes of the game saw the Rangers with a concerted effort, leading 1-0 and 2-0 after each of the first and second periods, respectively, while outshooting the Steelheads 13-9 and 10-7.

Dawson Carty looked poised to earn his second career win over his former club and hometown

team but instead suffered the loss, making 28 of 31 saves. Jack Flinn earned the win, giving up just two goals on 26 shots.

Darby Llewellyn provided the offence for the Rangers, scoring both Kitchener goals.

He got his team on the board early, giving the Rangers a 1-0 lead just 1:43 into the game with Adam Mascherin picking up the lone assist.

Had it not been for a handful of goalposts and a trickling puck on a goal line, the game could easily have been tilted much more heavily in the Rangers favour, but they would settle for the 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

Llewellyn capitalized again at 9:45 of the second period, assisted by Mascherin and David Miller. With a two point afternoon, Mascherin extends his point streak to five games to start the season.

The Rangers thought they had given themselves a 3-0 lead on a breakaway goal by Jake Henderson after the right winger alluded Mississauga defenceman Austin Osmanski, but the Steelheads challenged the call under one of the newly adopted Ontario Hockey League rule changes for the 2015-16 season that a goal can be reviewed if a potential offside was not called.

After a lengthy review, the goal was overturned and the Rangers reverted back to a 2-0 lead.

The non-goal proved to be a real turning point for the Blueshirts, as things began to head south for the visitors from that point on. Everett Clark cut the Mississauga deficit to 2-1 with a shorthanded goal assisted by Kitchener native Nathan Bastian at 12:01. Clark would register the equalizer via a power play goal with just 3:22 remaining in the third, assisted by Nylander and Jared Walsh. The Steelheads controlled much of the third period, outshooting the Rangers 11-3 and eventually 4-0 in the 58 seconds of overtime.

Mississauga was 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Rangers were 0-for-3 and allowed the shorthanded goal.

MacInnis, Hora and Brian Brosnan each wore 'A's and skated as assistant captains for the game.

Nylander (3), Llewellyn (2) and Clark (1) were chosen as the Three Stars of the game.

The Rangers are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they return home to host the Sudbury Wolves for a 2pm matinee on Thanksgiving Monday, October 12th. Fans are asked to bring a non-perishable food item or monetary donation to Monday's game to support The Food Bank of Waterloo Region in their annual food drive initiative.

Tickets for the Rangers next home game are available online at kitchenerrangers.com, by calling Centre in the Square, or through The Aud Box Office.
