Stilson Stuns Sox in Double-A Debut

Bowie, Md. - The Baysox (31-35) eight-game winning streak came to an end Saturday night as they fell at the hands of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (23-43) 5-3.

Despite a late rally, the Baysox were never able to dig out of the early 4-0 hole they fell into during the first two innings.

"We didn't pitch well from the start," said Manager Gary Kendall. "Tim [Bascom] wasn't his normal self. We got into some tough situations and had to play catch-up and it just didn't happen for us. I liked the way we stayed in it; we could have played a little better baseball all the way around. We didn't get a lot of opportunities to run and go first to third and do some things that have been making us successful - it was just one of those days."

New Hampshire struck in the top of the first inning against Baysox right-handed starting pitcher Tim Bascom. Ryan Goins and Brian Bobcock hit back-to-back singles and Ben Francisco walked to load the bases. With one out, Mark Sobolewski singled to right field to plate two runs and give the Fisher Cats the 2-0 lead.

The Fisher Cats added two more runs in the top of the second inning. With one out, Sean Ochinko tripled to right field and scored when Justin Jackson singled to right field. Goins reached on a bunt to the pitcher and he moved to second base on a throwing error by Bascom that also advanced Jackson to third base. Bocock plated Jackson with a sacrifice fly to right field to make the score 4-0.

New Hampshire tacked on another run in the top of the eighth inning against left-handed reliever Chris Petrini. Sobolewski drew a one out walk and advanced all the way to third base on a wild pitch. With two outs, Brian Van Kirk singled to right field to plate Sobolewski and give the Fisher Cats a 5-0 lead.

The Baysox staved off the shutout and mounted a late rally in the bottom of the eighth inning against New Hampshire reliever Scott Gracey. Catcher Brian Ward drew a lead off walk and center fielder Antoan Richardson hit a one out single to right field that moved Ward to second base. With two outs, third baseman Buck Britton doubled to right field to clear the bases and designated hitter Robbie Widlansky followed with a double to right field that scored Britton and made the score 5-3.

Bascom pitched five innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits while striking out five batters and walking three in the loss.

"The first couple guys got on and I went to my off-speed stuff instead of trying to establish my fastball, which is what I do," Bascom said. "I go fastball and everything works off the fastball, but I didn't do that the first couple innings. Once I realized that it was a little bit too late, but I was happy with it the rest of the way. I was just trying to keep my team in the game and I pretty much just threw fastballs the last three innings."

Petrini pitched three innings and allowed one run on one hit while striking out one batter and walking one. Right-handed reliever Robert Hinton pitched a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit and striking out two batters.

Stilson earned the win in his Double-A debut, pitching five shutout innings and allowing just three hits while striking out two batters.

The Baysox are home through Sunday, June 17 for a six game home stand that concludes with the Father's Day Celebration Sunday, June 16.

RHP Bobby Bundy (2-8, 5.09) is scheduled to take the mound for the Baysox tomorrow as the teams completes a three game series against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. He will be opposed by RHP Deck McGuire (2-8, 6.72).
