McPherson Deals & Offense Rakes in 7-1 Win over Binghamton

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Curve pounded out seven runs on 12 hits while Kyle McPherson baffled the B-Mets hitters through five innings in a, 7-1, victory on Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium. McPherson (1-0), the 2011 Pirates Minor League Pitcher of the Year, allowed one run on four hits with five strikeouts in his 2012 debut.
The righty didn't have to worry about run support in his first start of the year as the Curve provided him with plenty of it and it began in the second inning. Ramon Cabrera and Jeremy Farrell led off the inning with back-to-back singles and set the table for outfielder Evan Chambers, who was getting his first Double-A start in right. Chambers delivered with a double inside the bag at third that scored Cabrera from third and the Curve had the early lead at, 1-0.
Altoona wasn't done scoring in the inning as with runners at second and third, Kelson Brown got in on the party with a sacrifice fly to center to bring Farrell in and make it, 2-0. Chambers moved to third on the play and then trotted home on a sac fly by McPherson in his first at bat of the year. When it was all said and done, the Curve led, 3-0.
Darin Gorski (4-4) was able to hold the Curve scoreless in the third but not in the fourth as the latter part of the lineup once again churned out three runs. With Cabrera on at first after another leadoff single, Farrell connected for his third home run of the year to extend the lead to 5-0. Chambers followed suit and crushed his first Double-A homer immediately following Farrell's, producing the first back-to-back homers since Quincy Latimore and Jordy Mercer did so June 2, 2011 in Trenton.
Six runs was plenty for McPherson, who did allow a run in the fourth on a two-out single by Rylan Sandoval. It was the only run of the game surrendered by Curve pitching as Mike Colla and Vic Black combined for four scoreless innings behind the work of McPherson.
Cabrera finished the game 3-for-5 with an RBI and now has five hits in eight at bats during the series. Farrell finished the night 3-for-4 with his homer and a pair of singles to go along with two RBI while Chambers ended the day, 2-for-4.
Shairon Martis (4-2, 3.67) will look to lead the Curve (30-36) to a series victory in the 1:05 p.m. finale on Sunday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium. Standing in his way will be Binghamton's RHP Greg Peavey (3-2, 5.04), who'll be making his 12th start of the 2012 campaign.
