Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - Ryan Cavan went 2-for-3 with a home run, an RBI and two runs scored and a trio of Flying Squirrels pitchers limited to Portland to just one earned run as the Richmond Flying Squirrels (33-35) defeated the Portland Sea Dogs (28-39) 3-1 at The Diamond Saturday night. Richmond has now won five of its last six games and will seek to complete a 5-1 home stand when the two teams meet in the series finale Sunday afternoon.
Both starting pitchers were sharp early on as they each tossed two scoreless frames. Ari Ronick allowed just one hit and recorded a season-high five strikeouts in four scoreless frames for the Flying Squirrels. Ronick made a spot start for Richmond. On the flip side, Portland starter Chris Martin worked two scoreless frames before Richmond broke the 0-0 tie with a run in the bottom of the third. Ryan Cavan hit a one-out single and stole second base. A throwing error by Sea Dogs catcher Matt Spring allowed Cavan to take third on the play. Gary Brown drove in Cavan with an RBI single that gave Richmond 1-0 edge.
After both starters exited the ballgame following the fourth inning, the Flying Squirrels extended their lead in the fifth. With one out in the inning, Mark Minicozzi belted a solo home run off Portland reliever Marco Duarte that sailed over the right field wall. It was Minicozzi's second home run with the Flying Squirrels since he joined the club on June 1. Two batters later, Cavan smacked a solo shot - his sixth home run of the season - over the right field fence, which pushed the Flying Squirrels lead to 3-0.
The Sea Dogs got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the sixth. Jeremy Hazelbaker singled off Richmond reliever Austin Fleet with one out in the frame. The speedy designated hitter promptly stole second base. Oscar Tejeda delivered an RBI single that scored Hazelbaker and made it a 3-1 contest.
After allowing Portland's lone run in the sixth, Fleet worked a scoreless inning before turning it over to Brett Bochy who tossed two scoreless frames to seal the win. Fleet (1-2) earned the win after surrendering just one run in three innings pitched. Martin (3-4) took the loss for Portland and Bochy picked up his eighth save for the Flying Squirrels.
The Squirrels will seek a series victory when the two teams meet in the finale of the three-game set at The Diamond Sunday afternoon. The Flying Squirrels will send RHP Andy Reichard (1-2, 4.56) to the mound. Portland is expected to counter with right-hander Stolmy Pimentel (1-3, 5.63). First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM.
