SERIES AT A GLANCE: The Flying Squirrels will attempt to get back on the winning track when they take on the Portland Sea Dogs game two of a three-game series at The Diamond tonight. Last night, Dan Butler and Peter Hissey hit consecutive RBI singles in the top of the eighth inning to lift the Portland to a 4-2 win over the Richmond Flying Squirrels. The loss snapped Richmond's season-high win streak at four game. Daniel Mayora went 2-for-3 with an RBI single and a stolen base for Richmond. The game was tied at 2-2 until the 8th inning. Sea Dogs starter Drake Britton limited the Flying Squirrels to eight hits and two earned runs in six innings pitched, but he did not factor in the decision. Chorye Spoone (1-1) and Josh Fields combined to toss three innings of score- less relief, with Spoone earning the win and Fields picking up his fourth save. Richmond's Chris Gloor surrendered two earned runs in the eighth, which snapped his team-high scoreless innings streak at 19.2 frames. The Flying Squirrels went 4-2 against Portland in 2011 including a 2-1 mark in Portland. Richmond is 9-4 all-time against the Sea Dogs. Richmond is 4-2 all-time in the River City. The two teams will meet six times in 2012, three times in Portland and three times in Richmond.
TODAY'S PITCHERS: LHP Ari Ronick vs. RHP Chris Martin Ronick: Makes his 18th appearance and ﬠrst start for the Flying Squirrels tonight. In his last appearance, Ronick allowed one hit, one earned run and one walk in ).2 innings pitched against New Hampshire Wednesday. He did not receive a decision in Rich- mond's 6-5 triumph in 11 innings. Tonight's game will be Ronick's ﬠrst career appearance against the Sea Dogs. Last season, Ronick went 3-1 with one save and posted a 3.56 ERA in 45 relief appearances with Advanced-A San Jose. He limited California League hitters to a .228 average (51-224). He made three starts for San Jose in 2010 and posted an 0-2 mark with a 10.80 ERA. Ronick owns a 14-11 record with one save and a 3.81 ERA in 105 career minor league appearances, including 39 starts. The Boulder, Colo. native was selected by the Giants in the 12th round of the 2008 June Draft out of the University of Portland (Ore.).
Martin: Makes his eleventh appearance and ninth start of the season tonight. In his last start, Martin allowed three hits and four earned runs along with three walks and three strikeouts in four innings pitched against New Britain on May 27. He received a no- decision in Portland's 8-5 triumph. Tonight's game will be his ﬠrst career appearance against the Flying Squirrels. He split the 2011 season between Low-A Greenville, Advanced-A Salem and Portland. Martin posted a combined record of 6-2 with four saves and a 2.55 ERA in 23 appearances, including one start. He has a career minor league record of 13-5 with four saves and a 3.15 ERA in 46 appearances, including 13 starts. He was drafted by Detroit in the 18th round of the 2004 June Draft and by Colorado in the 21st round of the 2005 June Draft out of McClennan (TX) Community College. He did not sign with either club and began his pro career with the Grand Praire AirHogs of the independent American Association in 2010. He signed as a minor league free agent with Boston following the 2010 campaign.
THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA: Richmond second baseman Ryan Cavan is enjoying a hot stretch at the plate. Cavan is batting .333 (8-for-24) with three doubles, two home runs, six RBIs and four runs scored in his last six games. He belted a solo home run in Thursday night's 3-2 triumph over New Hampshire. It was his second home run in as many nights and his ﬠfth of the season. Cavan delivered a run-producing, extra-base hit in four consecutive games (6/10-6/14).
ME GUSTA MAYORA: After going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base last night, Daniel Mayora picked up his team-leading 22nd multi-hit game of the season. He has two nine-game hit streaks this season, the longest of any Richmond hitter in 2012. In his ﬠrst season in the Giants organization, the veteran third baseman is hitting .303 with a team-best 27 RBIs.
DYNAMIC DUO: Middle inﬠelders Ehire Adrianza and Ryan Cavan have provided a strong defensive presence in Richmond's inﬠeld. Adrianza leads the Eastern League in ﬠelding percentage for shortstops (.982) and has committed just ﬠve errors in 271 chances. Cavan leads all second basemen in the circuit in ﬠelding percentage (.997) and he has committed just one error in 361 chances. Together, they have helped Richmond lead the circuit in double plays with 76.
THE GREAT GLOOR: Flying Squirrels reliever Chris Gloor's invincibility on the mound ﬠnally came to an end in last night's 4-2 loss to Portland. He allowed two earned runs in the eighth inning, which snapped a streak of 19.2 scoreless frames out of the Richmond bullpen, the longest scoreless streak for any Flying Squirrels pitcher this season. As a result, Gloor (1-1) was charged with his ﬠrst loss of the season after Richmond failed to come back against Sea Dogs relievers Chorye Spoone and Josh Fields in the ﬠnal two frames.
