Toledo Mud Hens News Release

TOLEDO, Ohio - Christin Stewart had another spectacular night at the plate, but the Toledo Mud Hens came up short in a 9-6 slugfest against the Louisville Bats on Friday at Fifth Third Field.

Stewart finished a home run shy of the cycle in the series opener, going 3-for-4 with a triple, a double, a single, three RBI, and a pair of runs scored. Grayson Greiner also finished 2-for-4 with a double, a single, and two RBI. In total, the Mud Hens (13-6) tallied five extra-base hits, one shy of matching their season-high set on April 9 at Indianapolis.

Ryan Carpenter struck out six Louisville (8-9) batters in five innings of work, but was saddled with the loss after allowing five earned runs on eight hits and two walks. Paul Voelker, Zac Reininger, and Louis Coleman each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

Louisville jumped out to an early lead, breaking the scoreless tie with three runs in the opening stanza. After Mason Williams led off the contest with a bunt single and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Nick Senzel brought him home with a two-run shot over the wall in left-center to give the Bats a 2-0 edge. The visitors added a third run when Brandon Dixon lined a two-out double into center to drive in Phillip Ervin.

The Mud Hens rallied in the bottom of the third, using four runs on just two hits to grab the lead. Kody Eaves grounded a leadoff single up the middle before Pete Kozma reached on an error to put runners on first and second with one out. After Eaves and Kozma each advanced a base on a wild pitch, Mahtook drew a walk to load the bases and send Mike Gerber to the plate.

Toledo recorded its first run when Gerber walked to end an eight-pitch plate appearance, scoring Eaves and cutting the deficit to 3-1. Dawel Lugo then struck out swinging, but Christin Stewart lined a two-out triple into the left-center gap to clear the bases and put the Mud Hens in front by a 4-3 count.

Louisville's frustration boiled over in the top of the fourth, as interim manager Dick Schofield was ejected by home plate umpire Charlie Ramos for arguing balls and strikes. Carpenter needed eight pitches to retire the Bats in order as the Mud Hens retained their lead heading into the bottom of the frame.

The Bats recaptured the momentum with a six-spot in the top of the sixth, restoring parity when Dixon singled to right to plate Sebastian Elizalde. Louisville took the lead when D.J. Peterson scored on Steve Selsky's groundout to short, and tacked on another run as Tony Cruz reached on an error to drive in Dixon and make it a 6-4 ballgame.

Louisville extended its lead with three more runs to open up a 9-4 cushion. Senzel lined a base hit to left to score Cruz before Tyler Goeddel got in on the act with a triple into deep right-center to bring in Williams and Senzel.

The Mud Hens answered back with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Greiner ripped a double over the head of Goeddel that rolled all the way to the left-field wall to drive in Stewart and trim Louisville's lead to 9-5.

Toledo refused to go away quietly, mounting a furious rally in the bottom of the eighth. Stewart lined a base hit, while Jim Adduci doubled to right to put runner son second and third with nobody out. After Jason Krizan flew out to right, Greiner singled through the left side to plate Stewart and bring the tying run to the plate with one out. However, the next two batters went down in order as the game headed to the ninth.

The Mud Hens return to Fifth Third Field tomorrow for another showdown against Louisville. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.
