Gwinnett Stripers News Release

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The Gwinnett Stripers allowed runs in each of the first six innings of a 10-4 loss to the Durham Bulls Friday night at Coolray Field.

Stripers starter Luiz Gohara (L, 0-1), in his second rehab start from Atlanta, was tagged for six runs - four earned - on seven hits over 4.0 innings in the series opener.

Jake Bauers hit the first of three home runs for the Bulls as the second batter of the game to make it 1-0. Willy Adames followed with a single and scored on a double by former Gwinnett player Brandon Snyder.

The Bulls got a sacrifice fly in the second inning from Kean Wong to make it 3-0. In the third, Joe McCarthy reached on an error by second baseman Tyler Smith and Snyder followed with a two-run homer to raise the lead to 5-0. An Adames sacrifice fly the next inning made it a 6-0 deficit for the Stripers.

Gohara's night ended after he gave up a single to open the fourth. He lasted 4.0 innings, allowing seven hits, six runs, four earned runs, three walks and two home runs while striking out four.

Andrew Velazquez hit the third and final homer for Durham - a two-run shot - in the fifth inning off reliever Miguel Socolovich and Jeremy Hazelbaker added an RBI double in the sixth.

Durham starter Anthony Banda (W, 3-2) held the Stripers scoreless until the sixth inning, with Gwinnett already trailing 9-0. Rio Ruiz led off with a walk and moved to second on a passed ball. Dustin Peterson brought him home with a single, extending his on-base streak to team-high 13 games. Peterson scored later that inning on a single from Rob Brantly.

Elian Leyva pitched well in relief again, going 2.0 scoreless innings allowing two hits with a strikeout and lowering his season earned run average to 1.23 (1 ER in 7.1 IP).

Both teams scored in the ninth inning to finish the game. Rex Brothers walked Velazquez, then Jason Coats brought him home on a triple to center. Coats ended the game 3-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored.

The Striper's final two runs came off Jaime Schultz after Sean Kazmar Jr. led off with a single and was brought home on a long double by Jaff Decker, who went 2-for-3. Jose Bautista drove Decker home with a single for his first RBI in a Stripers uniform. But Ruiz flew out to center, Peterson walked and Carlos Franco struck out to end the Gwinnett rally and the game.

Every Durham batter had at least one hit in the contest, led by Coats and Bauers, who also ended 3-for-6 and scored twice.

The Stripers (7-12) will eye redemption in game two of the three-game series vs. Durham (9-10) Saturday at 6:05 p.m. Left-hander Kolby Allard (1-1, 3.68 ERA) gets the ball for Gwinnett, while the Bulls counter with righty Chih-Wei Hu (0-1, 4.15 ERA). Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM The Other Side of the River beginning at 5:35 p.m.
