Stevenson's Blast Keys 9-3 Win for Charleston

CHARLESTON, SC - Casey Stevenson had two hits, including a long three-run homer, to lead the Charleston RiverDogs to a 9-3 victory over the Asheville Tourists in South Atlantic League action on Wednesday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park with 2,330 in attendance.
The RiverDogs now have a record of 51-36 (12-8 in the second half) through 87 games and Asheville drops to 58-32 (11-9 in the second half).
Asheville got the first run of the night in the second when Tyler Massey walked and eventually scored on a groundout, but their slim lead didn't hold up for long.
After a pair of singles put two men on to start the bottom of the third for the RiverDogs, Robert Refsnyder lined a base hit through the middle to score the tying run to collect his first RBI as a professional. A double by Ben Gamel off starter Chris Jensen (9-3) brought in two more runs and, after a walk, Stevenson (2-4, HR, 3 RBI, run scored) drilled a three-run homer over the right field wall, his fourth of the year, to cap a six run inning. In the fourth, Eduardo Sosa added to Charleston's lead when he started the inning with a triple and scored on a balk.
Harold Riggins (1-5, HR 2 RBI, run scored) cut into the lead for the Tourists in the fifth with a two-run homer to right, number 13 on the year, to cut the deficit to 7-3, only to see the RiverDogs respond again. Ali Castillo got one run back with an RBI single in the sixth and Kelvin De Leon brought in Cito Culver with a single in the eighth.
Charleston's bullpen did a good job shutting down the Asheville lineup following Riggins' homer. Philip Wetherell (3-2) pitched a scoreless sixth and was credited with the victory. Pedro Guerra finished off the night and picked up his fourth save by pitching the last three innings and not allowing a run.
BALLPARK FUN: The last 30-game winner in Major League Baseball, Denny McLain threw the ceremonial first pitch and then signed autographs and sold his autobiography on the Riley Park concourse. Comedy Central personality and Lowcountry native Stephen Colbert was in the park enjoying the game with the rest of the crowd at The Joe.
COMING UP: The series with Asheville continues on Thursday night as Charleston's RHP Will Oliver (3-3, 4.43 ERA) takes on RHP Daniel Winkler (8-5, 4.86 ERA). Also, as a reaction to Folly Beach City Council's vote this week to ban alcohol on the beach, the RiverDogs are turning Shoeless Joe's Hill into the only Lowcountry site where alcohol can be consumed on a "beach" as the club promotes another Budweiser Thirsty Thursday.
