Drive Drop Second Straight to GreenJackets, 4-2
July 11, 2012 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Augusta, GA - In search of becoming the fastest Drive (43-47, 9-11) pitcher in franchise history to record 10 wins, Henry Owens was denied that feat Wednesday night. The southpaw exited the game with Greenville trailing 1-0, but after tying the game - twice - eventually lost 4-2 to the Augusta GreenaJackets (43-46, 11-9) at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
Owens retired the first seven batters he faced, before surrendering a one-out double to Brett Krill followed by Kelby Tomlinson's single. It appeared as if the 19-year-old would get out of the frame unscathed, striking out Shawn Payne, but an errant throw on a pick-off attempt allowed the game's first run to score.
It would be the only run Owens would allow during his 5.0 inning stint, albeit unearned, while striking out five batters. It wasn't until the top of the sixth that the Drive finally answered, tying the game. Three straight base hits by Garin Cecchini, David Renfroe, and Henry Ramos culminated in a run for Greenville, but they would leave the bases loaded.
In his second inning out of the bullpen, Nefi Ogando hit Tomlinson with a pitch which eventually regained the lead for Augusta. Tomlinson stole second and scored on Payne's two-out single.
The GreenJackets' second lead would be short lived as Cody Koback's ground out scored Cecchini to tie the game in the top of the eighth. The third baseman led off with a single, then swiped his 31st base of the season before moving to third on Ramos' sac bunt.
With Nate Striz (0-2) emerging from the bullpen for the bottom of the eighth, the right-hander allowed the home team to score twice, the eventual game-winning runs.
The Drive and GreenJackets continue their series on Thursday, with first pitch set for 7:05 PM in the third contest. Right-hander Noe Ramirez (0-1, 2.89 ERA) will toe the rubber for Greenville, while Augusta counters with right-hander Kyle Crick (3-6, 3.22 ERA).
The Drive return home to Fluor Field on Thursday, July 19th for a four-game series with the Lexington Legends. The brief home stand starts with $1 Drink Night! For more information regarding tickets, call (864) 240-4500 or log onto GreenvilleDrive.com.
