Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - If you want to enjoy an ice cold beer with some sand between your toes, then Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park is now the only legal place in the Lowcountry you can do so.
As nearby Folly Beach begins their self-imposed 60-day ban on alcohol consumption on the beach that means that only Shoeless Joe's Hill at The Joe is the lone public site in the area where alcohol and sand are allowed legally to merge.
Folly Beach City Council on Tuesday passed an emergency ordinance to ban alcohol on the sand effective immediately on the heels of the July 4thruckus that landed several people in jail with alcohol-related issues.
"It was truly an unfortunate situation on Folly Beach and we support fully the police and actions taken by City Council," said RiverDogs General Manager Dave Echols. "However, it opens a unique opportunity for us since we now have the only sandy area where alcohol consumption is permitted legally."
Shoeless Joe's Hill is located in the right field area of Riley Park. The sand-based area has several Palmetto trees nearby to provide some relief from the sun but is primarily a sun-drenched spot in the facility.
On Thursday, which coincides with the regularly-scheduled Budweiser Thirsty Thursday, the RiverDogs will operate a beer station in the right field area near Shoeless Joe's Hill with $1 specials. Special for this Thursday will be the first 50 fans (of age) to visit Shoeless Joe's Hill and purchases a $1 beer receives a Budweiser koozie. And during the game, one lucky fan will win an in-game Beach Party at Shoeless Joe's Hill from Budweiser that includes a private party for 10.
As usual, the RiverDogs check closely for underage drinking as all potential patrons must present their ID in order to receive a wristband which permits the opportunity to purchase beer and wine.
The RiverDogs are amidst an eight-game homestand as the host the Asheville Tourists through Friday while the Greenville Drive visits Riley Park from Saturday through Tuesday. And now the only place in the Lowcountry to offer the opportunity to enjoy a beer and the sand are at The Joe.
