Lexington Legends News Release

(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) Delino DeShields Jr.'s three-run home run in the fifth inning broke a scoreless tie, and the Lexington Legends held on to defeat the Kannapolis Intimidators 3-2 Wednesday afternoon.

Mike Kvasnicka began the fifth inning rally with a leadoff double. Ryan McCurdy's sacrifice bunt moved Kvasnicka to third, and Ruben Sosa walked. After DeShields twice tried unsuccessfully to bunt, Sosa stole second. With two strikes, DeShields homered to left-center field, giving the Legends the 3-0 lead.

That margin held until the top of the eighth, when Grant Buckner and Kevan Smith hit back-to-back home runs to cut the lead to one at 3-2. The Intimidators got the tying run to third base with two outs in the ninth, but reliever Dayan Diaz retired Buckner on a fly to right field to end the game.

Lexington starter Luis Cruz (6-5) worked five innings of shutout baseball to get the win, allowing five hits. Evan Grills pitched the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings, and Diaz worked around two singles in the ninth to record his 12th save of the season.

Kannapolis starter Chris Devenski (5-4) was handed the loss after allowing the homer by DeShields in the fifth. Devenski pitched five innings, striking out five batters.

The Legends have won the first two games of the four-game series. Game three is scheduled for Thursday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
