Mississauga Steelheads News Release
MISSISSAUGA, ON - For the third time in 9 days, the Steelheads and the Petes squared off on Sunday afternoon at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre. As anticipated, there was no shortage of scrums after the whistle in this one; with a total of 12 penalties being dished out over the course of the contest.
Making their home-ice debuts for the Steelheads tonight were CJ Clarke, Duncan Penman and Aidan Prueter.
The Petes got to work early in this one, converting on two of their first three powerplay opportunities and taking a 2-0 lead by the midway point of the opening stanza. Christopher Paquette's 17th of the season made it 1-0 for the visitors before Brady Hinz scored his first of two on the afternoon to double the margin.
Keean Washkurak, who was all over the puck this afternoon, had a goal called off shortly after the Petes took a 2-0 lead but Steelheads Captain, Cole Carter would find the back of the net just moments later - and this one would stand up. Washkurak and Ham were credited with the helpers on Carter's 25th of the season. 2-1 Petes through 20 minutes of play.
Liam Ham would tie the game for the Steelheads at 6:34 of the second period; stepping into a wrister and beating Hunter Jones on the blocker side. With the goal, Ham now has 13 points in 14 games since joining the Fish. Harley and Lyszczarczyk drew the assists on Ham's 5th of the campaign.
Paquette responded for the maroon and white shortly thereafter - depositing his second of the game with the man advantage. Liam Kirk would add another to make it 4-2 Petes midway through the frame.
Three more goals would be scored before the second period came to a close. First, it was Keean Washkurak with his 8th of the season and third in as many games to pull the Steelheads within one. With just 0:24 remaining in the period, Nick Robertson scored for the Petes to regain their two goal lead but with just under 9 seconds to go in the period, Alan Lyszczarczyk found the back of the net to make it 5-4 Peterborough. The goal was Lyszczarczyk's 20th of the season and 10th in as many games.
The third period saw plenty of scoring chances at both ends but despite outshooting the Petes by a margin of 46-33, the Steelheads would skate away with the 7-4 loss in this one. Denault would add an insurance marker early in the third before Brady Hinz added an empty netter to round out the scoring.
The Steelheads will hit the road next weekend for a Northern 3-in-3 against the Battalion, Wolves and Greyhounds. The team is back in action at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre on Friday, January 18th with the Flint Firebirds in town for the only time this season.
