Brantford Bulldogs News Release
HAMILTON, ONTARIO. In a game that had a little bit of everything, the Hamilton Bulldogs lost to the Niagara IceDogs 6-5 in a shoot-out Sunday afternoon at FirstOntario Centre.
Half way through the 1st period Arthur Kaliyev netted his 30th of the season to get the Bulldogs on the board and then on the power play, Matthew Strome (16) found the back of the net to make it 2-0. Niagara scored late to cut Hamilton's lead to 2-1.
In the 2nd period, Matthew Strome was awarded a penalty-shot, and right before the shot left his stick, the lights at FirstOntario Centre went out. While Strome scored on the shot, the ruling on the ice was for Strome to re-shoot the penalty shot that was saved by Niagara's goalie. The two teams went on to each score twice in the 2nd period with Hamilton's goals coming from Brandon Saigeon (25) on the power-play followed by Arthur Kaliyev's (31) second of the game as the Bulldogs led 4-3 after two periods.
After Niagara tied the game 4-4 near the half-way point of the 3rd, Hamilton looked like they might have scored the game winner as Matthew Strome (17) connected on the power-play with just 1:49 left on the clock, but the IceDogs forced overtime with only 20 seconds left to tie the game 5-5.
There was no scoring in overtime and all three Bulldogs (Kaliyev, Strome and Saigeon) were stopped in the shoot-out with Ben Jones scoring the game winner to give the visitors a 6-5 win.
3 STARS:
1) Ben Jones (NIA) 2) Matthew Strome (HAM) 3) Arthur Kaliyev (HAM)
The Bulldogs next home game is Saturday January 12th against Kingston at 7pm.
