Brampton Steelheads News Release

Mississauga, ON - The Sarnia Sting were in town Friday night for their lone trip to the Hershey Centre this season. The Steelheads are coming off a 2-1 OT loss at the hands of the North Bay Battalion last night while the Sting come in well rested after having the previous four days off. The Sting last played Sunday at home against Flint which saw the team score four in the third to take it 5-2 over the Firebirds. The Sting are currently 2nd in the West Division as they sit 7 points back of the Windsor Spitfires. Both teams would be without their leading scorers as Alex Nylander (Sweden) and Pavel Zacha (Finland) were invited to their respective country's National Junior Selection Camp for the 2016 World Hockey Championships

The first started with the Steelheads controlling the puck for the first 5 minutes. The team had a couple of quality chances but Sting goalie Justin Fazio would deny them of getting on the board. That would be big for Sarnia as seven minutes into the game, Jordan Kyrou would fire his 6th of the season past the blocker of Jack Flinn to give the Sting the early 1-0 lead on their first shot of the game. Following Kyrou's marker, neither team was really able to generate any quality scoring opportunities. The best chance the Steelheads had at tying the game up was with six minutes left in the frame. Thomas Lattavo would be hauled down on a breakaway which rewarded the winger a penalty. Lattavo would fake backhand and go to his forehand but wasn't quite able to get the puck over the left pad of Fazio as he turned it aside. The Steelheads would trail 1-0 heading into the second for the second straight game. Shots in the period were 9-8 Steelheads.

The Sting would extend their to 2-0 halfway through the second. After receiving the Josh Jacobs pass in the slot, Brandon Lindberg would fan on his original shot but recovered and was able to slid the puck by Flinn to extend the lead to two. Towards the end of the period, Sarnia would go on an offensive burst, scoring three goals in a 3:07 span. First, Sasha Chmelevski would come in off his wing and fire it five hole on Flinn for his 7th of the season to make it 3-0 Sting. Just under two minutes later, newly acquired over-ager Matt Mistele would bury a loose puck in front of the Steelheads' net for his 13th goal to give Sarnia a 4-0 lead. A minute after Mistele, Ryan McGregor would put away the wraparound for his 5th of the year which gave the Sting a comfortable five goal lead going into the final frame. Shots in the period were 10-7 Sting, 18-16 Sting total.

The Steelheads entered the third with the daunting task of coming back from five goals down. They would get on the scoreboard five minutes into the third. After Jakob Chychrun was sent off for tripping, the Trout would capitalize three seconds into the powerplay as Stefan LeBlanc's point shot would be re-directed by Josh Burnside, and go off the post and in to cut the Sting's lead to 5-1. The goal was Burnside's 6th of the year as Nathan Bastian would draw the other assist. Following Burnside, the Steelheads picked up their play and generate quality scoring chances but to no prevail. With eight minutes left in the game, the Sting would regain their five goal lead as Nikita Korosteleve would crank one off the back bar behind Joseph Murdaca for his 10th of the season. Justin Fazio would shut the door the rest of the way as the Sting would take it by a final of 6-1. Shots in the period were 12-9 Steelheads, 28-27 for the game.

The Steelheads would like to wish all of our fans a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. The team will be back in action on Tuesday, December 29th when they host the Peterborough Petes. Get your tickets now by going to www.ticketmaster.ca/mississaugasteelheads
