Brampton Steelheads News Release

MISSISSAUGA, ON -- Following a nail-biting loss in a shootout last night in Niagara, the Steelheads returned home to the Hershey Centre, hungry to get back in the win column in the middle of a tight playoff push. Despite the large group of travelling IceDogs fans, the Mississauga faithful held strong and brought some noise of their own.

Spencer Martin got the nod in net for the Steelheads and made some big saves early on, sparking momentum for his team. With just under 5 minutes to play in the frame, a huge pad save from Martin sprung a Steelheads rush, and Andrew Goldberg got the Trout on the board first after a feed from Brandon Belding. The Trout would end the first on the penalty kill with the IceDogs pressing hard, but would manage to head into the break still up 1-0.

The IceDogs would even things up at just under three minutes into the 2nd period after Billy Jenkins picked up a pass in front of the net and buried it from close range. The Steelheads created their fair share of scoring opportunities throughout the period, as Moran robbed Cody Thompson, then shut the door on a 2 on 1 play from Cianfrone and Goldberg. Halfway through the 2nd, the Steelheads penalty kill went to work with Josh Burnside sitting in the box, and created multiple shorthanded opportunities.

The Trout headed to the power play after a Brian Brosnan cross checking call with 1:31 left to play, then would get a two man advantage just thirty seconds later as Aaron Haydon joined him in the box. The second period would end 1-1, and the Steelheads started the third frame still on a 5 on 3 and pressing hard.

In the third, Haydon went down hard in the corner and was tended to by his trainer before heading down the hall to the locker room. On the ensuing Niagara power play, Martin made the save of the game after gloving a Jenkins shot. The play would be reviewed, as Martin's glove came dangerously close to crossing the line. However, the no goal call stood.

After a back and forth third period, overtime was needed for the second time in as many nights to solve things. Shots were 30-29 in favour of the IceDogs after sixty minutes, and the Steelheads dominated early on in overtime, including a chance from Bryson Cianfrone that Moran stopped on the goal line.

Just like last night, the Steelheads and IceDogs headed to a shootout.

Lucas Venuto and Bryson Cianfrone both scored for the Trout, while Brendan Perlini and Carter Verhaeghe were both denied by Martin. The win, combined with the Ottawa 67's loss, the Steelheads need a single point against the Kingston Frontenacs on Sunday to clinch a playoff berth.
