Steelheads Shutout in Nation's Capital
March 3, 2019 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Brampton Steelheads News Release
The Mississauga Steelheads were unable to get one past Ottawa netminder Michael DiPietro in a frustrating 3-0 loss on Sunday afternoon in the Nation's Capital. Tye Felhaber's 56th of the year and Kody Clark's game-winning goal secured the two points for the 67's.
A scoreless first period in Ottawa, might have been a welcome result for the Steelheads in this one. Keeping a potent 67's offence who re-discovered their scoring touch in a 5-3 win over the Hamilton Bulldogs on Friday night was nothing to be upset about. The Trout responded well to an early penalty kill after Richard Whittaker was called for slashing, just a minute and 40 seconds into the game. The Steelheads penalty killers made Joe Ranger's task much easier with multiple well-timed shot blocks. The 67's best chance to open the scoring came moments after the power play had expired, when a puck fell to 55-goal scorer Tye Felhaber in the slot. Joe Ranger stood tall at the stop of his crease to prolong the 67's forward's wait for his 56th of the season. The Steelheads would get a power play of their own after a mix-up at the Ottawa bench resulted in a Too Many Men call. The best chance on the Steelheads man-advantage fell to Nicholas Canade, who let a slap-shot rip with traffic in front, Michael DiPietro was equal to the task catching the puck in his chest. A late penalty to James Hardie for slashing meant the Trout would start the second frame on the penalty kill.
The Steelheads would successfully kill off the penalty to start the second period. Nick Isaacson who is making a habit of being a nuisance for other teams power plays created a 2-on-1, but his two efforts on Dipietro were both turned aside. The Steelheads would get another odd-man rush moments later, the puck eventually fell to Keean Washkurak who was caught in between making the extra pass and pulling the trigger, causing the opportunity to come to nothing.
The 67's would eventually break the deadlock through Kody Clark's 16th of the season. Noel Hoefenmayer made the critical play, his shot-fake and pass put the puck on a platter for Clark and gave Joe Ranger no chance. The assist was Hoefenmayer's 42nd of the campaign tying him with Thomas Harley for fifth-most by a defenceman in the OHL this season.
The Steelheads would get an opportunity to even the score when Lucas Chiodo's stick crept up and caught Cole Carter drawing blood from the Steelheads skipper, handing the Trout a four-minute power play. The Trout's top PP unit went to work and had the 67's penalty killers on their heels, having sustained pressure for the better part of two full minutes. The best opportunity fell to Keean Washkurak a cross ice-feed that the centreman fired hard in the direction of the goal, DiPietro's desperate stretch the only thing that denied the forward of his 14th this season. The Steelheads would head into the final frame down a goal.
The Steelheads would spend much of the final period chasing the game. Tye Felhaber's 56th of the campaign 4:10 seconds into the final frame doubled the 67's lead. The two best chances for the Trout in the third came from Alan Lyszczarczyk and Cole Carter. Two similar plays saw the wingers drive around their defenders and towards goal, unfortunately for the Trout, Dipietro would be able to find the puck in the scramble that ensued on both occasions. The Ottawa netminder would end up registering his second shutout as a member of the 67's stopping all 22 Steelheads shots on goal.
Some notes from the game: Sunday's game marked the first time the Steelheads had been shutout since January 11th against the Sudbury Wolves and just the third time all season. Alan Lyszczarczyk tested DiPietro the most, with 5 SOG. Joe Ranger would turn aside 23 of the 25 shots he faced. The Steelheads now sit just one point, or a Barrie loss away from clinching a playoff spot.
The Steelheads will return to action Friday, March 8th for Bleed Blue night when the Steelheads take on the Hamilton Bulldogs.
