Idaho Steelheads News Release
BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads lost 5-4 in a shootout tonight to the Las Vegas Wranglers before 4,932 fans at the Bank of America Centre. Idaho picked up a point in the game, and 5 points out of a possible 6 in the three-game series against the Wranglers, as it continues its quest for a National Conference, West Division playoff spot.
Las Vegas' Ryan Gaucher led his team in scoring, notching 4 points in the game (2 goals, 2 assists), as well as a goal in the shootout.
The Wranglers' netminder Sebastien Centomo improves his record to 13-11-3, while Idaho's Colin Zulianello falls to 6-7-2.
At 2:13 of the first period, Idaho's Scott Burt scored, but the goal was waived off as the referee ruled the entire puck didn't cross the line. So, Burt decided to put one in that couldn't be disputed and :06 later he tallied on a rebound from defenseman Peter Metcalf's shot. Las Vegas answered back with a power play goal on a nice play as Chris Stanley tapped in a shot by Christian Chartier at 5:18. On a fluky play, Zulianello went behind the net to play the puck, but his stick got stuck between the boards and he had to leave it there. The Wranglers gained control of the puck and though Zulianello made a great glove save, he couldn't stop the next shot from going in and Ryan Gaucher's slap shot put Las Vegas in the lead at 14:04.
Idaho began the second period on the power play, but couldn't convert. Bobby Russell was credited with scoring Idaho's game-tying goal at 6:56, but the puck went in off a Wranglers' skate as Russell tried to pass to Billy Tibbetts. Then, the Steelheads took the lead for the first time in the game as Idaho rushed the puck in on Centomo and defenseman Darrell Hay beat him. The lead lasted only :61 when the Wranglers evened things up. Adam Huxley scored his 6th goal of the season, top shelf on Zulianello.
Las Vegas quieted the crowd when it capitalized on its second 5-on-3 of the third period. Gaucher slipped a soft one, his second of the night, by Zulianello at 3:15 giving his team its 4th goal of the game and another one-goal lead. On the power play, Idaho tied it up again. Ben Keup tallied his 4th goal of the season at 6:56, after Dan Vandermeer took a slap shot from just inside the blue line. For the second night in a row, the game was sent to overtime. Idaho outshot Las Vegas 43-28 at the end of regulation play.
Neither team could score in the sudden-death overtime, so the teams went to a shootout . Idaho's Scott Burt tallied, but one goal wasn't enough as Las Vegas' Gaucher and Chartier each beat Zulianello.
