Victoria Salmon Kings News Release


Victoria, BC – The Victoria Salmon Kings and the Bakersfield Condors finished their two game series Saturday. The Condors got the four valuable points they needed to apply more pressure in the West Division race to the post season.

The Salmon Kings played with intensity applying pressure of their own though, and they had the Condors on their heels from the drop of the puck. The two teams went to the dressing room after first period knotted at nothings. Goalie Jaime McCaig, made his debut as a starter and looked strong, but only had to stop five shots.

Forward Alexey Glukhov's adaptation to the North American game has been smooth, and at 4:36 his nifty back hand beat Condors goalie Yutaka Fukufuji five hole, to put Victoria up 1-0.

At 12:20 of the period the puck comes live of the end zone netting, and within 5 seconds Salmon Kings forward Adam Campbell was charged with a high stick. The Salmon Kings are then charged a bench minor, and McCaig had to backstop the Salmon Kings two men down, for a full two minutes.

The successful kill thrilled the 2490, who erupted into a standing ovation. The fans in Victoria come to see hockey played well, and rewarded the competitiveness of McCaig and the team effort, to maintain the one goal lead.

In the third McCaig was the victim to a couple of defensive miscues in front of him, they resulted in quick Bakersfield goals by Paul Rosebush, at 8:08, and Mathieu Brunelle's fourth in Victoria at 9:00.

At 14:06, Brett and the net connected for Lutes 16th of the season. Connor James, who returned from the AHL and registered three assists on Friday, beat McCaig on a short handed deflection to stretch the Condors lead, to 4-1.

The Salmon Kings were unable to recover and the Condors went on to beat them by the 4-1 margin. Nevertheless McCaig took home the 3rd Star finishing the game with 35 saves.

The Victoria Salmon Kings next home game is Wednesday March 9, 2005, when Victoria and Idaho meet for the final series at the Bear Mountain Arena. The Salmon Kings and the Idaho Steelheads play again on Thursday the 10th and the finale and Fan Appreciation day on Saturday the 12th, at 1:00 pm.
