Falcons Shutout by Gulls

Fresno Falcons News Release

SAN DIEGO - In the final game of the season series between the Fresno Falcons and the San Diego Gulls, Fresno was shutout by a 31-save performance from Gulls goaltender Eddie Ferhi, 4-0, at the San Diego Sports Arena. The Falcons still won the season series from the Gulls, though, with a record of 5-3-1.

San Diego played like a team desperate to keep alive in the West Division playoff race by taking a 2-0 lead through the first period. Max Birbraer hammered home a rebound at 1:22 followed by a power play goal off a wrist shot from the blue line through a screen from Nikita Korovkin at 12:45.

The Gulls picked up where they left off in the first by adding to their lead 2:45 into the second when Joel Stepp beat Fresno goaltender Brett Jaeger with a wrist shot from the near circle. San Diego cashed in its second power play goal to take a 4-0 advantage to the final period after Sean O'Connor re-directed a shot from the point past Jaeger at 9:56.

The only question to be answered in the third was whether the Falcons would ruin Ferhi's shutout bid. Despite 16 shots Fresno in the final period, Ferhi stood tall to help deliver the 4-0 shutout win.

The loss is Fresno's first in regulation since a 1-0 setback to the Bakersfield Condors on Feb. 11 and drops the club to 32-18-7 on the year, six points ahead of the fifth-place Idaho Steelheads and seven points in front of the Gulls in the West Division standings.

Fresno next travels to face the Las Vegas Wranglers on Friday, March 11, before returning home for a two-game series with the Bakersfield Condors on Saturday and Sunday, March 12 and 13, at Save Mart Center. Tickets are on sale for the two games against Bakersfield for as low as $8 per seat and may be purchased directly at the Save Mart Center box office and all Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 485-TIXS (8497) or online at www.ticketmaster.com.
