Gators fall to Everblades 4-2

Estero, FL. On a night when Kyle Kettles brilliance kept Louisiana in the game, a controversial penalty call with 1:37 remaining in the game led to a Simon Trembley power play goal and a 4-2 Everblades win, Sunday night in Estero, Florida.

     Josh Barker got the Gators on board at 10:45 of the first period. Barker getting his 4th goal of the year on a slap shot from the left point. Barker's low shot beat Tyler MacKay, to the stick side, Chris Thompson and Wes Mason picked up the assists. The Everblades tied the game on a power play goal by Kris Vernansky at 14:24. The former Boston Bruin picked up his 13th of the season as Chris Lee's shot was deflected by Brent McDonald to the far post and knocked in for the 1-1 tie.

    Florida took their first lead of the game 1:43 into the 2nd period. Vernansky scoring his 2nd goal of the night and 14th of the year as David Lundbohm stole the puck and left a perfect drop pass in the slot for Vernansky's wrist shot. The Gators answered at 18:44 when Jim Shepherd snuck a wrist shot from the left side boards through the pads of MacKay for a 2-2 score through 40 minutes. The Everblades fired 24 shots on Kettles in the period but the Gators netminder stopped 23 offerings to give the Gators a chance.

    In a rugged 3rd period, a controversial call of slashing on Kyle Kettles at 18:23, resulted in the 5th power play of the night for Florida. Just 21 seconds later, Simon Trembley (3) blasted a slap shot off the stick of a Gators defenseman past Kettles for the game winning goal. Brent McDonald (17) added an empty netter at 19:59 for the final score of 4-2. With the loss, Louisiana's record is now 19-31-6, 44 points and 5th place in the South. The Gators have gone 6 games in a row without a win. The Gators were outshot by Florida 51-18. Power plays were 0-3 for the Gators and 2-5 for the Blades.
