Idaho Steelheads News Release

BOISE, Idaho - Though the Steelheads outshot the San Diego Gulls 35-21, they lost their second game at home this season to the Gulls, 3-2 in a shootout before 4,805. (The first loss came against Bakersfield.) Mark Pederson proved to be Idaho's thorn as he scored both Gulls' goals, and got the game-winner in the shootout.

The Gulls got on the board at 15:24 of the first period when Pederson got one over Idaho netminder Blair Allison's shoulder in Allison's first game since December 6th. Allison came up with a couple of nice stops, including a glove save on R.J. Enga, to keep the game close at 1-0 for the Gulls coming out of the first period. The Steelheads outshot the Gulls in the first period 11-10, 9-3 in the first half.

The Steelheads tied it up at 3:07 of the middle frame when A.J. Begg scored on a pass from Dampy Brar. Cory Morgan also recorded an assist on the goal. Then, Pederson scored his second goal of the night with a slap shot that deflected off Scott Swanson's stick and blew past Allison from well outside the blue line. Dean Tiltgen got the lone assist on the tally. The Gulls had a one-goal lead for the second time of the night. With a one-man advantage Marty Flichel, the league's leading goal scorer, tied the game with his 27th goal of the year at 18:35. Cory Morgan and Dampy Brar got the assists. Shots on goal after the second were 28-14 for Idaho.

No scoring in the third period resulted in the two teams going to a shootout for the first time this season. Both Pederson and Sylvain Deschatelets scored for San Diego. Idaho missed on all of its trys as Koenig was perfect.

Of note: Head-to-head the Steelheads are now 5-3-1 against the Gulls this year; and 22-24-4 all-time. Mark Pederson has scored all four San Diego goals in the last two games played against Idaho.

The two teams meet again tomorrow night at the Bank of America Centre. Puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
