Kingfish fall to 'Pilots, 4-3

For the sixth time this season, the Kingfish and Ice Pilots battled to a 4-3 final, this time, Pensacola picked up the win in the shootout as Niklas Sundberg made 46 saves in the losing effort.

Pensacola took a 1-0 lead as Kevin Cloutier tallied a shorthanded goal at the 4:10 mark of the first period of play. Scott Hewson picked up an assists on the goal.

Trevor Allman extended the Ice Pilots lead to two as he took a centering pass from Kevin Cloutier and beat Niklas Sundberg at the 15:52 mark of the opening stanza. Kerry Ellis-Toddington also added an assist on the goal.

Jerry Gernander cut the Pensacola lead to one at the 6:31 mark of the second period as the teams skated four aside. Gernander picked up a rebound and fired the loose puck over Maxime Gingras. Trevor Demmans and Joe Guenther added the assists on the goal.

Thirty-eight seconds later Bryan Richardson tipped a centering pass from Mike Oliveira past Gingras to tie the game at two. Demmans added his second assist of the night on the goal.

Pensacola took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play as Louis Dumont took a fake slap-shot pass from Brad Dexter at the 15:25 mark to regain the lead for the Ice Pilots. Greg Pankewicz also added an assist on the goal.

Bryan Richardson tied the game at three as the punched the puck past Gingras at the 18:49 mark of the third and sent the game to overtime. Kingfish pulled Sundberg with a minute and a half remaining in the third period for the extra attacker as they had pressure in the Pensacola zone. Jason Norrie ad Mike Oliveira added the assists on the goal.

Neither team could capitalize in the overtime session, but Brad Dexter scored the only goal in the shootout to give the IcePilots the 4-3 shootout victory.
