Idaho Steelheads News Release

BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads lost the first of a three-game series against its 2004 Kelly Cup Finals foe, the Florida Everblades, 4-2 before 3,612 fans at the Bank of America Centre Wednesday night.    Florida struck first at 9:34 into the game when the Steelheads gave up a turnover in their own end.  Ernie Hartlieb came up with the puck and fed the league's leading goal scorer, Damian Surma, who was all alone in front of the net and tapped a backhander past goaltender Frank Doyle.  Idaho evened things up when Scott Burt jammed home the tying goal at 17:06.   Florida had a two-man advantage to start the second period and scored on a one-timer by Matt Hendricks at the 1:20 mark to again give the Blades a one-goal lead.  Peter Metcalf tied the game again after Ben Keup skated in on net and attempted a shot, but the puck bounced off Kowalski's back onto Metcalf's stick.  Florida missed on a penalty shot near the end of the middle frame after Jonathan Zion pulled down David Lundholm who was going in on Doyle on a breakaway keeping the game tied at two apiece.   At 16:22 of the third period, Doyle came out to play the puck and after he cleared the puck, Matt Hendricks tripped Doyle who fell to the ice.  Jim Abbott came up with the puck and scored the game-winning goal with Doyle out of position.  With 1:23 left in the game, Idaho pulled its goaltender to add the extra attacker.  Hendricks found the empty net to seal the game.    Everybody who attended tonight's game received an American flag, compliments of St. Luke's Idaho Elks Rehabilitation Services (SLIERS), to honor the country's war veterans.  In addition, SLIERS purchased 200 Steelheads tickets for veterans to attend tonight's game.    Steelheads players will be wearing a commemorative patriotic jersey, sponsored by Modern Woodman, for all three games against Florida this week.  The jerseys will be auctioned off to fans during the games on Friday and Saturday night.  Modern Woodman has designated all money raised to the Call to Duty Fund - a local fund set up to cover transportation costs to bring National Guard Soldiers home to spend precious time with loved ones before their deployment to Iraq.  Funds will also be used for phone cards so soldiers can keep in touch with family and friends while in Iraq.   FINAL BOX SCORE   Goals by Period      Florida.............  1  1  2 -  4 Idaho...............  1  1  0 -  2   1st period - 1, FL, Surma,Damian (Hartlieb,Ernie, Abbott,Jim) 9:34. 2, IDH, Burt,Scott (Peters,Warren, Keup,Ben) 17:06.
