Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies News Release
Charlotte, NC â Paul Caponigri tallied the equalizer shorthanded with 55 seconds left in regulation and goaltender Jake Moreland stopped all 4 Charlotte shooters in the shootout to lead the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies to a 4-3 shootout win over the Charlotte Checkers before 3274 at Cricket Arena in ECHL action Wednesday.
Jason Notermann got the Bullies (5-4-1-) on the board with a power play goal at 6:44 of the first period. Notermann ripped a slap shot from the right-wing circle that deflected off Charlotte goaltender Alex Westlund's pads and trickled into the net to give the Bullies a 1-0 lead. Notermann tallied a second power play goal at 11:31of the first when he picked up Brian Fahey's rebound at the top of the crease and slipped the puck underneath Westlund for a 2-0 advantage. Charlotte (5-1-1) would crack the scoreboard before the end of the period. Dan Preston from his own zone floated the puck to a streaking Eddie Pershin on the right side, and Pershin with a defenseman on his back hooked the puck around Moreland and tapped it into the net at 19:30 of the first to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Charlotte's Matt Chandler netted the equalizer at 12:26 of the second period when his shot from the right-wing circle deflected off Moreland's glove and into the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2.
In the third period, Dusty Jamieson gave Charlotte the 3-2 advantage as he picked up the loose puck in the left circle and fired a wrist shot over the right shoulder of Moreland at 5:08. Caponigri though would net the equalizer with the Bullies shorthanded, tapping the centering feed of Brian Fahey past Westland at 19:05 of the period to tie the game 3-3 and send it to overtime and a shootout.
Charlotte out-shot the Bullies 32-28. Moreland made 29 saves to pick up his third win of the year. The Bullies went 2-6 on the power play. Notermann has now scored 6 goals this season, with all 6 coming by way of the power play.
