Alaska Aces News Release
LAS VEGAS â Joe Talbot and Mike Scott each had a goal and four assists as the Alaska Aces scored a season-high five goals in a 5-3 victory over the Las Vegas Wranglers in front of 3,974 Tuesday at Orleans Arena.
Blessed with an array of talented forwards but averaging just 2.56 goals per game coming into Tuesday's game (21st in the ECHL), the Aces finally broke out in the first period against the Wranglers, scoring on their first two shots on goal. Scott Gomez registered his first marker as an Ace at 3:44 by banging home a loose puck in front. Two minutes later, Olivier Filion went upstairs with a perfect wrist shot from the left circle, giving Alaska the early 2-0 lead. Both goals were set up by Scott and the previously slumping Talbot, who had been limited to one assist in the season's first nine games after a 56-point (24g-32a) rookie campaign last year.
Dan Tudin scored on a rebound to put Las Vegas (3-2-1) on the board with two minutes left in the first period, but just 37 seconds later Gomez, operating behind the net, found Scott gliding down the slot for the latter's fifth goal of the year and a 3-1 bulge after the opening 20 minutes. Talbot picked up his third assist of the night on the scoring play.
Darren Lynch brought the Wranglers to within 3-2 early in the second period, but the Aces once again came up with an immediate reply, as Louis Mass snuck down the slot and slammed home his first goal of the year at 6:09, set up once more by Talbot and Scott. Las Vegas came right back, as Tudin scored his second of the night 22 seconds later on a backhander, leaving the score 4-3 Alaska heading into the final period.
The Aces maintained that lead for more than 32 minutes until Talbot sealed the victory with an empty-netter, his first goal of the season, at 18:41 of the final period. Peter Aubry finished with 33 saves to earn the win in goal, Alaska's third consecutive win on the road and a victory that pushes the Aces over .500 (5-4-1) for the first time this season.
Alaska wraps up its 14-day road trip this weekend against the Long Beach Ice Dogs (4-2), Friday at 6:30 p.m. ADT and Saturday at 6:05 p.m. ADT, with both games broadcast live on AM 750 KFQD and at www.alaskaaces.com. Coverage begins 20 minutes before the puck drops at Long Beach Arena. Alaska returns home for a three-game series against the Victoria Salmon Kings, with the first two games scheduled for Wednesday and Saturday night at 7:15 p.m. and Sunday's series finale slated for a special 1:30 p.m. start at Sullivan Arena.
