Steel Reel

The Steelheads saw their seven-game points streak come to an end on Wednesday night with a 5-3 loss to the Alaska Aces, but Friday they look to reverse roles and spoil the Aces' six-game winning streak at CenturyLink Arena. The Steelheads come into their 20th game of the season a point behind the Aces in the Mountain Division standings. Idaho has not lost consecutive games in regulation since the first two games of the season.

The Steelheads led twice on Wednesday night but were unable to close out the Aces, who scored three goals in the third period led by Peter Sivak. Branden Troock tied the game in the final frame with a deflection goal in his first ECHL game this season, while rookies Will Merchant and David Glen both scored goals earlier in the game. Philippe Desrosiers made 43 saves in his first Steelheads appearance this year.

Big Boss...

Joe Basaraba earned two assists on Wednesday night and now has a goal and five points during a four-game points streak, as well as a seven points over his last seven games. Basaraba's line with Travis Ewanyk and Branden Troock generated seven shots, six coming from Troock, and were able to create scoring opportunities off the rush. Anthony Luciani also had a two-point night, giving him three goals and eight points in his last six contests.

Stopping Sivak...

The Steelheads did a decent job keeping the line of Peter Sivak, Tim Wallace, and Tim Coffman under wraps for two periods on Wednesday. In the third period, that trio broke through twice, with Sivak the finisher. His goal with just under three minutes to play was his second of the period and the eventual game-winner. Sivak now has eight goals during his current five-game goal scoring streak and 13 points in a six-game points streak. Coffman has a six-game points streak as well, with a goal and eight points. Sivak's 15 goals lead the ECHL.

Shutdown Shots...

The Aces fired 48 shots on Wednesday, the most shots the Steelheads have surrendered in a single game this season. Much of that is due to the Aces' style of play, firing the puck from every angle and trying to keep the puck to the net as evidenced by Tyler Ruegsegger's goal scored form just above the goal line in the first period. Still, Alaska ranks third in the ECHL in shots-per-game, and Idaho will look to cut down the workload for their goaltender and spend more time in the offensive zone on Friday.
