K-Wings Fall Victim to Five-Goal Third Period from Jackals

December 2, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release

ELMIRA, NY- The Kalamazoo Wings and Elmira Jackals entered the third period tied at two, but Kalamazoo fell victim to a five-goal eruption from Elmira in a 7-4 loss on Friday at First Arena.

Early pressure from the Jackals helped crack the game open in a minute and a half, as Sebastian Sylvestre fired a pass to Mike Radja who was unmarked in the middle of the ice. Radja snapped a quick shot that slipped past Joel Martin's blocker and opened the scoring.

Seven minutes later and killing a penalty, Kalamazoo equalized with their second shorthanded tally of the season. Justin Taylor forced a turnover, raced behind the Elmira defense, and rolled the puck through the legs of Jackals' goaltender Jason Kasdorf with a backhand-to-forehand deke. Taylor's goal was his team-leading seventh of the season.

Entering the second period tied at one, Elmira re-took the lead after an almost identical play to their first score of the night. Sylvestre set up behind the Kalamazoo goal and dished to Radja in front for a one-touch finish at the 1:31 mark of the middle period.

Minutes later and working on a five-on-three power play, Kalamazoo drew even when Eric Kattelus delivered a rink-wide pass that Anthony Camara wired into the goal from the right circle with a one-timer. The goal was Camara's sixth of the season, and sent the game into the second intermission tied at two.

Elmira cranked up the heat in the third and scored three goals in a 2:26 span, including two within ten seconds of each other, to take a 5-2 lead at 8:07 of the final period. Kenton Miller scored two during the assault, and Mark Bennet added one of his own.

Looking to mount a comeback, Eric Kattelus weaved into the Jackals' end with the puck on his backhand and lifted a roof-seeking drive that elevated over the shoulder of Kasdorf and into the top corner, making it 5-3 at the midway point of the period.

42-seconds later, the Jackals padded their lead as Vaclav Karabacek produced his second goal in as many nights, and opened up a three-goal lead for Elmira.

Not going away quietly, Kalamazoo generated another chance twenty seconds later, capping off a three goal in 1:02 span between the two teams. Tyler Shattock found the puck from a scrum in front of the Elmira goal and punched it into the net for his fifth goal of the season.

Putting the game out of reach less than two minutes later, Karabacek netted his second of the night and earned his fourth point of the game, as Elmira closed out a five-goal third period and earned a 7-4 victory on their home ice.
