December 2, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - The Missouri Mavericks announced today that they have partnered with Variety Children's Charity of Kansas City and Silverstein Eye Centers Arena for a project named "We Can Play 2!" The project is designed to provide opportunities for special-needs children to learn to play hockey and ice skate.
"We could not be more excited to work with Variety KC to make adaptive hockey and ice skating available to children in the Kansas City area who live with developmental disabilities," said Mavericks owner Lamar Hunt Jr. "The Mavericks are dedicated to growing the game of hockey in Missouri and Kansas and the 'We Can Play 2!' project will make it possible for so many more children to enjoy the game. One of every four families in America are impacted by children with disabilities so this will have a wide reach."
"We Can Play 2!" launches on December 2 with a fundraising initiative to help provide the necessary equipment for program participants. The goal of the fundraising drive is to secure $50,000 by December 31. Lamar Hunt Jr.'s Loretto Foundation will match the first $10,000 in donations. Donations can be made by texting 'wecanplay2' to 33923, and the Mavericks will give a ticket voucher good for any home game to those who contribute $25 or more.
Variety Children's Charity of Kansas City is an organization that provides children with developmental disabilities adaptive equipment and opportunities for activity and inclusion.
"Kansas City is a leader in inclusive efforts for all children and families. Community leaders and generous partners like the Missouri Mavericks and the Loretto Foundation lend such amazing support, and bring about real change to our area," said Variety KC executive director Deborah Wiebrecht. "'We Can Play 2!' is such an appropriate name for this effort. All kids CAN ice skate and play hockey given the right equipment and opportunities," added Wiebrecht.
Programming and activities for "We Can Play Too" are scheduled to begin in March, 2017 at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena and the Centerpoint Medical Center Community Ice Rink.
As an additional way to contribute, Silverstein Eye Centers Arena will be hosting "Frosty Skate," December 21-27 which includes ice skating, holiday crafts, visits from Santa Claus and much more. Twenty-five percent of the proceeds from this event will go to benefit Variety KC and the purchasing of adaptive equipment. For details visit [1]www.silversteineyecentersarena.com.
Todd Mitchell, general manager of Silverstein Eye Centers Arena/Spectra said, "We are proud to partner with Variety KC, Independence Parks and Rec and the Missouri Mavericks to raise funds that will allow us to purchase adaptive sleds and walkers to be used at Centerpoint Medical Center Community Ice Rink so that all children and adults in our community can participate in on-going, inclusive programming to include hockey and skating activities."
