Steel Reel

The Steelheads battled back from a two-goal deficit in the third period Friday night to move back above the .500 mark with their third shootout win of the season, a 4-3 decision over the Thunder to draw their three-game series even at a game apiece heading into Saturday's rubber-match.

Rob Linsmayer, Will Merchant, and David Glen all scored in the third period to help Idaho overcome 2-0 and 3-2 deficits. Kyle Jean scored the only goal in four rounds of the shootout, while goaltender Branden Komm stopped all four shooters he faced on top of 28 saves in regulation and overtime. The Steelheads have not lost back-to-back contests since the first weekend of the season, while the Thunder failed to grab two points on the road for the first time this season.

Money Merchant...

Will Merchant's power play goal in Friday's third period tied the score 2-2, and Merchant has been at his best with the man-advantage. Merchant leads the Steelheads with three power play goals, all three of the rookie's pro goals coming with the Steelheads a man up. Merchant has two goals and four points during a three-game points streak. He's been effective with linemates Rob Linsmayer and Jefferson Dahl, with Linsmayer posting a goal and an assist Friday and Dahl adding an assist to extend his points streak to ten games, the longest active streak in the ECHL.

Shootout Shutout...

Branden Komm's four-save performance in the shootout improved Idaho's record to 3-0 in the breakaway contest. The Steelheads have scored one goal in each of their shootout wins, but that's been enough with Komm stopping 8-of-8 attempts and Landon Bow stopping 5-of-5. One of Komm's stops in the shootout was on Brian Ward, who had beaten him on a penalty shot earlier in the game.

Thunder and Lightning...

Tempers boiled over in the second meeting between the Steelheads and Thunder, with both teams racking up season-highs in penalty minutes. The Steelheads logged 51 minutes in penalties, while Adirondack collected 55. That included three fights in overtime with Jefferson Dahl, Rob Linsmayer, and Brandon Anselmini dropping the gloves with Mikkel Aagaard, Alex Wall, and Greg Wolfe. The game featured five fighting majors and four game misconducts.
