Brampton Steelheads News Release
The Steelheads welcomed members of Meadowvale Minor Hockey Association tonight as they sought to break their slump. The Steelheads got right to work tonight as they put the pressure on the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
Bobby MacIntyre corralled a puck behind the net and centred for Mikey McLeod with a backhand, who was stopped on the chance. Jacob Brennan made a nice pad save at the other end of the ice as both teams began to set the tone of the game. The Steelheads struck first as McLeod picked Darnell Nurse's pocket down low and fed Jimmy Lodge on the doorstep who beat Brandon Halverson to give Mississauga the lead.
The Steelheads were forced to the penalty kill shortly after, but were defensively sound through the first 10 minutes, killing off the chance. Connor Boland evened the score with a one-timer off the post on Brennan's glove side. Sergey Tolchinsky made a move to get behind Brennan, but could not beat the far post on the attempt and Jared Walsh cleared the puck. Everett Clark reinstated the Steelheads lead, beating Halverson low on the ice with the man advantage. The Greyhounds scored twice to take their first lead of the game as the action continued in this busy first frame. In the dying seconds of the period, Bryson Cianfrone took a feed from Sam Babintsev in front and snuck it five-hole on Halverson to tie the score.
Joseph Raaymakers replaced Brandon Halverson in goal to start the second. The Soo came out strong, as they pushed the play into the Mississauga zone. As the Steel moved up the ice, Clark had a chance to grab a second goal as Raaymakers fell, but found the puck underneath him. The Greyhounds made the Trout pay on the power play. Michael Bunting put them up 4-3, and Bailey extended the lead to two goals with his second of the contest. Mississauga had a chance with the man advantage but couldn't capitalize, trying to continue their offence from the first. Brennan, dialing in, made a great save on Nick Ritchie attempting a wraparound stretching his arm across his crease.
Lodge potted his second of the game to bring the Trout within one, and not long after, the Steelheads would draw even. Walsh, continuing his strong game scored Mississauga's fifth goal on just their 13th shot with a slap shot. As time expired, Brennan made another highlight-reel save, this time sprawling with his paddle to shut the door on the Soo.
Halverson returned to the crease for the third period, as the Greyhounds continued to mix it up in goal. Soo made good on another power play, marking their third goal with the man advantage. The Steelheads were staying competitive in the game, but just couldn't get another one past Halverson. Brennan was pulled with 1:30 to go, and the Steelheads needed to press. The Trout had a chance, but the Soo broke out and scored into the empty net for a final score of 7-5.
