Steelheads Even Series Wtih 4-1 Victory Over Wranglers In Game Two

April 23, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release

Boise, ID - Four unanswered goals, including two tallies by Lance Galbraith, pushed the Steelheads to a 4-1 win over the Las Vegas Wranglers in front of 2,425 fans at Qwest Arena on Monday night to even the best-of-seven conference semi-finals series at one game apiece.

The win is the Steelheads (5-3) third on home ice in the 2007 playoffs and it snaps the Wranglers (5-1) ECHL-best, 18-game winning streak in the process.

For the second straight game, the Wranglers tallied first, breaking a scoreless tie midway through the first period. After Steelheads' goaltender Steve Silverthorn (23 saves) stopped a shot from the slot by Tyler Mosienko, Aki Seitsonen got to the loose puck and fed it back into the crease where Mosienko knocked it in for his fourth of the playoffs and his first of the series. Marco Peluso picked up the second assist.

At 16:41, the Steelheads tied the game with a power play tally by defenseman Kory Scoran, the first of his pro playoff career. From the offensive zone, John Lammers fed the puck back to Lars Helminen, who worked the puck to free to Marty Flichel. Flichel then tossed a pass to Scoran at the left circles and his snap shot caromed off of Wranglers' defenseman Scott Schoneck's skates and through the legs of goaltender Mike McKenna (22 saves).

With less than a minute left in the opening period, Galbraith deflected Darrell Hay's point shot over the glove of McKenna for his sixth goal of the playoffs and the Steelheads first lead of the series at 2-1. Lammers drew the second helper.

After 20 minutes of play, the Steelheads led 2-1 while out-shooting the Wranglers 9-5.

The Steelheads then took a 3-1 lead on their first even-strength goal of the series at 7:06 of the second period. Again it was Hay aiming a shot to the left post, where the disc banged off Derek Nesbitt's body and into the back of the net. Nesbitt's sixth of the playoffs was the only goal in the second stanza.

With the Wranglers pressing early in the third period, Silverthorn made a couple of point blank stops on Wranglers' forwards Derek Edwardson and Peluso to keep the Steelheads in command. Then moments later, Galbraith converted off a two-on-one rush to increase the lead to 4-1 at 3:49 of the frame. On the play, Scoran cleared a rebound off the pads of Silverthorn up ice to Flichel who threaded a feed to Galbraith streaking down the slot. The Brampton, Ontario native made no mistake with his chance, blasting the puck over McKenna's glove for his ECHL-leading seventh of the playoffs.

The final shots favored the Steelheads 26-24. In the specialty teams department, the Steelheads went two-for-six on the power play and three-for-three on the penalty kill.

The series takes a night off before resuming in Las Vegas for Game Three on Wednesday, April 25. The puck drops at 8:05 p.m. MDT. For tickets for the second round, call (208) 331-TIXS, check out the Steelheads' web site (using the print-at-home feature) or go to the Qwest Arena box office.
