Dayton Bombers News Release

Dayton, OH-The Dayton Bombers lost their first game of their 2007 Kelly Cup Playoffs campaign at the hands of the Cincinnati Cyclones 5-4 at the EJ Nutter Center on Sunday night.

The Bombers and Cyclones are both fresh off of sweeps of their opponents in the first round. The Bombers got out to an early lead on the power play when Greg Labenski threw a shot from the point wide of Cyclones' goaltender Cedrick Desjardins (24 saves, win), the puck bounced back into the slot where winger Brent Walton (1) banged the rebound home at the 1:55 mark. Bombers' goaltender Adam Berkhoel (16 saves, loss) stopped all six of Cincinnati's shots. The Bombers took the 1-0 lead into the locker room after 20 minutes.

The second period saw an offensive explosion from both teams. The Cyclones evened the score only 1:18 into the period when Jason Deitsch (2) slapped a puck out of the air passed Berkhoel. The goal ended Berkhoel's 142:24 stretch of shutout hockey. Deitsch (3) then opened the floodgates scoring again at the 5:02 mark. Less than a minute later at 5:54 Greg Stewart (4) put a great shot short-side passed Berkhoel giving the Cyclones a 3-1 lead. The Bombers showed great resiliency coming back at the 16:17 mark when assistant captain Paul Kelly (2) stepped onto the ice after his slashing penalty, took a drop pass from Bryce Anderson and sniping a shot over Desjardins right shoulder. The assist was Anderson's first career playoff point. Dayton then evened the score 3-3 at the 17:01 mark when Philippe Dupuis (1) put in another rebound goal.

It was Cincinnati's power play that would give them the edge in the third. At the 6:59 mark Mathieu Aubin (2) put a rebound passed Berkhoel during a five-on-three situation. Again on the power play at 10:13 into the third, Sam Ftorek (2) put a laser from the point to the corner of the net. After pulling Berkhoel to add an extra attacker, Joe Cullen (1) was able to get one back at 17:41 on a six-on-three situation but the Bomber's did not have enough left to overcome the deficit.

The Bombers and Cyclones play game two of their best-of-seven series on Wednesday, April 25 at 7:00 pm at the EJ Nutter Center. Great seats are still available for that game.
