Garett Bembridge scored twice and the Steelheads added two power play goals, as they improved to 5-0-0 on the season, with a 5-3 victory over the Fresno Falcons (3-1-1) on Sunday, in Fresno, CA.
The two teams traded goals in the first 20 minutes, with the Steelheads scoring the game's first goal for only the second time all season. Bembridge notched his third tally of the year at 9:12 of the period, with center D'Arcy McConvey and fellow linemate Mike Stutzel gathering the assists. McConvey's helper extended his season-long, five-game scoring streak.
At 14:02 of the frame, forward Brett Hammond got his second of the year for the home team, tying the match at one. Defenseman P.O. Beaulieu and forward Derek Krestanovich added the assists on the equalizing marker. After 20 minutes of play, the shots were 15-8 in favor of the Steelheads.
In the second period, the Steelheads took the lead just 41 seconds after play resumed. Forward Marty Flichel blasted home a power play goal off a feed from center David Bararuk. Scott Burt drew the other assist on the go-ahead goal. Then at 15:05 of the frame, Bararuk blasted a shot past goaltender Brett Jaeger for another man advantage goal. This time, Burt drew the primary assist, with Flichel getting the second assist. Only 70 seconds later, the visitors struck again, with Bembridge collecting his second of the afternoon, and fourth of the two-game series. McConvey got his second assist of the contest and Stutzel also helped setup the play.
At the second period, the Steelheads led 30-17 in shots and 4-1 on the scoreboard.
Fresno cut the deficit to two at 4:01 of the third period on a power play goal by defenseman Cory Murphy. J.F. Plourde and Peter Fregoe drew the assists. Recently assigned rookie forward Janos Vas then made the score 5-2 in favor of the Steelheads, with his first ECHL goal. Defenseman Jonathan Zion registered the only assist.
With just 1:32 left in regulation and their goaltender pulled, the Falcons made it 5-3 on a goal by Plourde.
Goaltender Matt Yeats finished with 26 saves for the Steelheads, to improve to 4-0-0 on the season. The Steelheads went two for three on the power play, while Fresno finished one for five. The Steelheads ended the afternoon with a season-high 38 shots on goal.
