San Diego Gulls News Release
PHOENIX - The San Diego special teams woes continue, and the Gulls still haven't figured out how to beat former teammate Mathieu Chouinard. San Diego failed to score on eight power plays, and Chouinard stopped 35 shots as the Phoenix Roadrunners routed the Gulls 7-1 Saturday night at America West Arena.
San Diego (1-4-0) lost its second game to Phoenix (3-2-0) in as many nights after the host Roadrunners went 5-for-8 on the power play. The Gulls had given up just two power plays in 22 opportunities (90.9 percent) entering the contest.
After stopping 41 shots Friday, Chouinard again stifled the Gulls, who out-shot Phoenix 36-29. San Diego is now 0 for its last 18 power plays.
Phoenix got on the scoreboard first at the 9:37 mark of the opening period. During a man-advantage, Dave Cousineau sent a centering pass from former Gull Cory Pecker into the net in for his first goal of the season and a 1-0 Roadrunners edge.
The hosts added another power-play tally later in the period when Shawn Snider got his first professional goal. The rookie center barely snuck the puck past San Diego goaltender Tyler Weiman with 3:25 remaining for a 2-0 score.
During the second period, the Roadrunners made it 3-0 during a 4-on-4 after B.J. Gaustad tipped in an Ed Hill shot just 2:34 into the frame.
Halfway through the period, San Diego finally found the net. Newcomer Richard Keyes, who scored two goals in his first game with the Gulls on Friday, brought the puck up the ice and sent it to Frantisek Skladany. The forward's nice centering feed went to Steve Hildenbrand, who banged in the puck at the right post for his second tally of the year and a 3-1 Gulls deficit.
But the Roadrunners wasted no time in responding. Defenseman Paul Ballantyne beat a screened Weiman just about a minute later and only nine seconds into Phoenix's fifth power play. Ballantyne's score, his first of the season, put the Roadrunners back ahead by three at 4-1.
To round out the scoring, the Roadrunners tacked on three more goals after killing off a two-man Gulls advantage for 1:57. Former Gull Dean Tiltgen found the back net twice in the third after Snider added his second tally of the game.
Notes: San Diego is 3 for 40 on the power play so far this season (7.5 percent)... The Gulls have now killed off 7-of-30 penalties (23.3 percent)... San Diego native Aaron McKenzie made his Gulls debut in net after Tyler Weiman was pulled with 10:26 remaining in the third period. The Monte Vista High alum made seven saves on eight shots... San Diego was 26-8-4 against the Phoenix Mustangs, who played in the West Coast Hockey League from 1997-98 through 2000-01... Goaltender Tom Lawson again missed the trip, staying with his wife for impending childbirth...
San Diego's seven-game road trip to start the 2005-06 season continues Wednesday against the Long Beach Ice Dogs, with game-time set for 7 p.m. The Gulls finish the trek Friday in Bakersfield before opening the home schedule Saturday, Nov. 5 against the Stockton Thunder. Gulls hats and magnetic schedules, presented by the Window Factory, will be given to the first 10,000 fans in attendance. The Home Opener will also feature the sixth annual "Teddy Bear Toss," presented by the San Diego School's Police Department and benefiting Children's Hospital. All fans are invited to throw a stuffed toy onto the ice after the Gulls score their first goal.
