Brampton Steelheads News Release
Mississauga, ON - Coming off of a big 3-1 win on the road in Niagara, the Steelheads returned home to the Hershey Centre to host the kings of the Eastern Conference, the Oshawa Generals, and former Steelhead Dylan Smoskowitz. The building was buzzing early on with residents from Ward 5 and Ward 9, along with players, families, and coaches of the Caledon Minor Hockey Association. Chase Marchand got the start for the Trout, while Ken Appleby took to the visitor's net.
The Generals would open the scoring just 3 minutes into the game, as Jacob Busch threw a puck on net that would sneak under the arm of Chase Marchand.
At the 10 minute mark of game, Marchand showed his athleticism between the pipes by sprawling across the crease and getting his toe on the puck to make a spectacular save on Scott Laughton.
Bobby MacIntyre would head to the penalty box after 12 minutes of play for boarding, which proved to be costly for the Trout as Hunter Smith buried a bad deflection off the initial shot from Cole Cassels to put the Gens up 2-0.
Once again deadly on the power play, Josh Sterk would add to Oshawa's lead after a quick passing play from Laughton and Cassels with Damian Bourne in the box for interference.
With just over a minute to play in the first, Joe Manchurek was awarded a penalty shot after being tripped up by Nick Zottl on his way in on net, which he made no mistake on, giving Oshawa a 4-0 lead.
The Steelheads were given a power play of their own with 30 seconds remaining in the frame, and in the dying seconds were able to create their closest opportunity of the game, but Josh Burnside was unable to bang in the puck waiting on the doorstep. Despite the score, the Steelheads had their fair share of chances in the first, and shots were 15 apiece after 20 minutes.
The 2nd period saw Spencer Martin get the nod between the pipes, in which he made several big saves early to try and shift the momentum to the Steelheads.
The Trout would finally get on the board after some nifty stick handling from Bobby MacIntyre in all alone, then going five hole on Appleby.
The second period came to an end with some four on four action with Bryson Cianfrone and Josh Sterk in the box after taking penalties 23 seconds apart. The Generals tried to add to their lead as time ran out, as a 2 on 1 broke out with Stefan LeBlanc the last man back, but Jared Walsh hustled back in time to break it up.
The third period saw the Steelheads with their fair share of opportunities, but unable to capitalize. Cianfrone had a break during 4 on 4, and Appleby was injured on the play. He looked to be in a great deal of pain as he rolled around the ice, and Daniel Altshuller began to prepare himself on the bench to potentially replace his goaltending partner. However, after being examined by his trainer, Appleby remained in the game.
Tempers began to flare on the ice, and after both serving unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, MacIntyre and Sterk dropped the gloves after leaving the box, ending their nights early.
Despite being able to keep the Generals off of the scoreboard in the final 40 minutes after some key saves from Martin, the Steelheads were unable to create some offence of their own, falling to the Generals 4-1.
The Steelheads are back at it tomorrow in Owen Sound to face the Attack. They head to Ottawa to take on the 67's this Tuesday before returning home on Friday, March 7th to host the North Bay Battalion.
